i think its pretty much the same story with all our schools here, except maybe las, which is tailor made for the US. we should lament our bad luck, and then get on with it! can’t do anything it about it now!

you got into LUMS, that’s great!! don’t you think studying abroad will be more expensive than lums anyway? even with aid, you have the costs of living and travel. and aid is very difficult to get these days, especially since the baby boom in the US and the recent economic recession. they’re not feeling very charitable towards us internationals, ESPECIALLY not pakistanis. i think you should reconsider LUMS, and maybe then apply for a transfer from there, I’d imagine it is much better known abroad that other institutions here, and the professors at LUMS would be much more able to give you better written recommendations etc.

engineering? that’s a good plan! and you won’t be waila during that year. Thanks, and good luck for your result as well! fingers crossed, because i messed up chemistry P4!

good luck with everything! :D

the above post is for noone’s fool. forgot to mention that!

@ NoonesFool and arabian1001night:
Hi! I just read your posts on this forum so i thought i’ll share my experience with you. I was pretty much in the same boat as you people. I have been the first person to apply abroad for undergrad from my school (Sialkot). My school was busy popularising the fact dt i was applying to ivies (which not many people here are even familiar with) when the admin should have given more time to my recommendations which honestly were mediocre (laden with flowery adjectives without paying heed to my strengths or exemplifying my persona). My school transcript was submitted at the last hr on 31st dec (for which i had to chase my headmistress to her home so that she’ll meet the deadline). I got no help while choosing my courses. I took on business subjects (maths, econ, accounts and business studies) which certainly do not qualify as rigorous courses. I took physics SAT on my own in my A-2 and scored a rather wow score considerng that i had not studied it before. My ecs were weak while academics were better (O-levels-8As, AS-Levels-4As including 2 distinctns). I got rejectd from everywhere except Bryn Mawr which did not give me any aid. Its not that i am complaining. I am satisfied with the way things have turned out for me. But I wish I had more guidance and directn around me. If not counselling, then atleast a precedent could have helped me in planning my application strategy. I am also keen abt transferng out next year to a university. I really hope that things turn out well for u guys (InshALLAH).

@Arabian1001night, I really did consider LUMS last year, and at that point I hadn’t made up my mind about applying abroad. While money was an issue, there were a lot of other things about LUMS that you can question. I agree, even with aid going abroad would have been quite expensive. But a lot of my travelling expenses would have been minimised since I probably wouldn’t be coming to Pakistan every year in the summers but spending them with relatives in the states. Also, aid IS hard to get but when you do get it it pretty much covers all your costs. In any case, it still would have been less than what LUMS would have cost me per year. Plus if I had gotten in with aid anywhere in the States, my aid would have gone up with my father’s retirement (which is expected this year). Here it would just add to the financial burden. LUMS is pretty stingy with its merit aid policy too, while NUST is somewhat more generous. And yes, while NUST doesn’t share LUMS’s international renown, it is in the international rankings so that is a small consolation :slight_smile: InshAllah (despite the minimal chances) my transfer might be successful. If not, there’s always post grad. So yes you’re right, no point in crying over it now.

@MAHEEN11, congratulations on your visa! Your credentials are impressive, and had you been in Roots or anyther place with better counselling, you probably would have had a better acceptance. But Bryn Mawr is amazing too. I was waitlisted there and I was really hoping they would take me off the list but that never happened. Again, aid was a huge issue. You should really make the most of your time there, what with haverford and swarthmore nearby. You actually can transfer from there to anywhere, especially since you’re not asking for aid either. Good luck!!

Also, everyone’s posting the same list, and pointedly excluding many acceptances from Islamabad. There was a Upenn acceptance from St. Mary’s, several Mt. Holyoke acceptances from BSS margalla, a Smith acceptance from BSS margalla and a Harvard, princeton aceptance from BSS margalla. These are the ones I know off. Many people from froebels and headstart got in to NYU, and there was also one Cornell acceptance from froebels.

@NoonesFool: The list that i posted is the enrollment list. The admitted students’ list is available in the older posts. If anything is missing from it, you can update it.

Maheen have you received your passport with the visa frm the embassy people already?

@Maheen11

Man, it seems like we’re all the victims of no information and very bad counselling. I really hope things turn out well for you too!!

@ Noones fool

NUST is it then :D

Good luck guys!

yup in two weeks.

Why do you guys need counseling? I think that the information and advice on CC is far more useful than any counselor can give.

@desi000:

Its not about counselling. Its about school teachers and heads having the know-how to manage college apps. They should be concerned abt em.

@desi, I agree with Maheen here. I could do without the counselling but if the school can at least do what the school has to do, i.e. properly fill out forms, then we’d be a whole lot better off. My final year report and mid-year report were half incomplete, my teacher recommendations not even submitted on the 1st of jan, my letter of recommendation from the principal was very generic (despite my being the only student to study more than four A level subjects in that batch, the only student to even apply to american colleges and the most active council member. Also the only coucil member who actually took her A levels seriously). I gave them my papers in the beginning of november and still didn’t get them back by mid-december. I had to make several trips to school everyday just so they would give them to me on time, and it takes me half an hour to get there from home. It wasn’t until I’d made the final trip, had a nervous breakdown and cried (YES, I actually CRIED) did I get my secnd teacher report back for Columbia - that too filled and signed by the principal since that particular teacher was too much of a ***** to be in school at the time she asked me to come. If only they had the decency to properly do what I’d asked them to, maybe I wouldn’t have been so badly ****ed.

Also, CC has a censorship mechanism? :O

@Noonesfool: I don’t know.

BUMPPPPPPPPPP

At the end of the day, CC’s all opinions and perspectives whereas counselors are people paid to counsel students regarding all matters. That being said, Pakistani counselors are no where even close to satisfactory at their job. You all will see the difference in college.

and yeah, CC will censor your foul-mouth! ;)

talha how is life in BYU? I was rejected but really wanted to go there.

The thread is so dead.
BUMP!
