@NoonesFool if they dont send their AS grades than at what basis do they get admission SATs and transcript, i dont think so?
@mushoo my transcript is very good almost all A’s and only 2 or 3 B’s and nothing below. How much will that help me?

Mushoo, has it occured to you that not every one gives AS? Many people just prefer to give thier entire A levels in one go. These people DON’T send in thier AS result because it doesn’t exist. The admission officers know this. Not a lot of people applied from my school. Infact, I was the only one, and I didn’t send in my AS, because I too had a C. School transcripts may include your AS result, but if you ask them not to then they won’t. You just write a letter to the adcoms telling them you’ll be giving all your A levels exams in one go and here, look at my expected grades in the meanwhile.

Oh okay I didn’t think about students who give A-Levels in one go – no need to be rude about it. In fact, if I recall correctly, Aitchison students don’t give AS-Levels. Still, a majority of students do give AS-Levels but I don’t know if it’s necessary to report them.

That’s a very good transcript and should help you a lot, especially if they don’t know your AS grades and you support your application with good midterm grades, essays and recommendations. Btw, the “safeties” you mentioned earlier aren’t safeties; they are “match” universities – universities that fit your profile. Safeties are universities below your profile or with a very high admission rate, and you should have a couple of those too.

Incidentally, what school are you from?

Im not from a very famous school like you guys. DHA Karachi, which has not send any of its student to any good schools in US. Will that also hurt my chances?
And you?
One more thing i know it will be a very silly thing but still… i saw some people’s stats who were accepted to top notch uni’s like harvard, mit etc… with these grades:
Harvard accepted student from England:
AS Level: A,A,A,A,A,A
A level: A*,A,A
MIT accepted student:
AS Level: A,A,A,A,A,B,B
A Level: A,A,A

Now i want to know that do i stand in between them (grade wise) IF i get these final grades:
A,A,A*,A

That would be a very good final result, except for the fact that you’d get it in August – long after decisions are made. If you’re talking about AS, it will come out in time for consideration as part of your application and of course these would be very solid grades.

However, you should know that unfortunately grades and scores are only one aspect of the application as far as US unis go. I was turned down from MIT, but I know of people with lower stats than myself who got in, as well as of people with unbelievably high stats who got rejected. The conclusion that I have personally reached is that after you cross a certain academic threshold, it’s really not about the A-grades and SAT scores any more.

Oh, and I don’t think being from DHA should hurt your chances.

so in your opinion whats that certain academic threshold? and sadly my final grades that i was talking about will come out in Aug, and as far as my AS results are concerned it will be ABCC(which have already came out) and then hopefully in Jan A,A so my final AS results would be A,A,A,B. I know that grades are not the only thing when it comes US but as i said before the rest of my Application (EC’s, Essay, recc’s etc…) will be all very good. Here it goes:
House captain
School band leader
community service(since 2005, first the earthquake and now the floods)
Tutoring my cousins(5 years)
Have done some business so have some entrepreneurship skills as well
So now should i go for my dream uni’s in US or should I just stick to my match uni’s?

Regards!

I don’t have a theory on what that academic threshold exactly is, but with those ECs and an “all A-grades except a couple of B-grades” transcript, I think you should definitely take a shot at your dream unis.

so i just want to plug in my sat scores any idea of score ranges both of I and II(i would be giving only 2). One more thing our predicted final A-level grades will be sent but what about our results of Nov papers, will that be also sent as forecast grades or will we be sending our actual results when they will be around in Jan just 20 days after deadline.
Regarding finance, how much does that affect admission as we all know that all top universities say that they are need-blind for internationals but what exactly is the reality and what is your personal experience? Does your contribution make a difference?

Regards!

I need to know if i can get into , and get aid, summin like 50 %?

applying to stanford, caltech, maryland, georgia tech, mcallistar , williams and a few safties.
Any thoughts?
Thanks alot!

i am also the chess champion at the community club, spelling bee champion at o levels and have written articles for science magazines.

Excellent extracurriculars, okay-ish academics. Focus on improving your results and apply to places where the curriculum isn’t too rigorous and where extracurriculars matter. For instance, Caltech has a hardcore science/math core curriculum and you should think about whether you’d be happy at such a place considering that you got a B in AS-Level math and a C in chem, after which you actually dropped chem

Improve your grades and apply to less science-heavy colleges and you should be fine. And make sure you have match and safety options that you would be happy to go to.

The collegeboard website has SAT score stats.

Your school will tell you what they’ll send as your expected grades. Usually expected grades are confidential, however.

Very few colleges state that they are need-blind for international students but those that do say so (Harvard, Yale, etc.) are in fact need-blind. At most US colleges, however, finances will affect admission chances.

Hi my Pakistani friends. I’m an Indian. I thought I should post in this thread to facilitate the peace process. :)

Btw, what was the admissions statistics from Pakistan like from CC? Did anyone get into HYPMS?

debarghya9, welcome to the thread! If you go back a couple of pages, you’ll find the number of acceptances from the top schools of pakistan and also the number of enrollments. They don’t cite the exact number, but they’ll give you an idea.

Oh I should’ve gone over the pages before asking.

Roots, KGS and Aitchinson seem to be running the show!

@debarghya9: Hi, and welcome to our thread :)

@All: So Class of 2014, what’s up? I hope visas and tickets are now out of the way… and most US colleges have started so some of us may have already left… how many on here have left for uni? How many are in the shopping/packing phase? Speak up, '14!

Thankyou for the advice Mushoo.

I am already at College. the orientation is so hectic and busy but that is good in a way that we wont be homesick for long enough. what abt others?

Oh, great to know! Yeah, that’s good that they have a busy orientation – better than a boring orientation I guess. I’m really looking forward to college but orientation doesn’t start at Caltech until mid-September.

Have you gotten your cell phone plan figured out? Their plans are seriously messed up and confusing!

I have bought the metropcs’s plan. it works only with their own phone. it is feasible for local calls but it does not have Pakistan on its international calling list so I’d advise u against taking the unlimited international call(s) plan.

Hi… umm, for the US are your o levels grades more important than your AS grades? and how would you compare or say, convert these grades into weighted and unweighted gpa?
One last thing, could someone please tell me something about class ranks? some people have posted stuff like x/650 or some such. Does that mean for example, if they aree in the sophmore year, there are 650 people in the grade?
Thankyou for looking. Good to be amongst pakis! :P
