So yeah, back from ADOCH and TWW… possibly the best 3 days of my life since CSLC. Vent and blog away… only thing to do till orientation :-D

here's the ADOCH, class of 2010, gallery from the daily jolt
(any cc posters on there?)

i missed ADOCH and couldn't get to brown until the next day, which made me very sad. if you don't mind, could you please tell me a few highlights of the day? it seems like you had a great time there. i was able to attend the full prefrosh festivities at princeton and was blown away, so i really regret that i couldn't go to the ones at brown.

thanks!

ADOCH was, simply put, amazing. There waa a speech by President Simmons, followed by a hilarious "Intro to Brown" movie of sorts put on by the Modern Culture & Media students (including clips from Fmaily Guy, Sex & the City, and The O.C.), two talent shows, a lot of night activities, and classes & lectures in the morning. You said you didn't get to Brown till the next day... does that mean you were there for TWW?

haha i couldn't even go to TWW because i had to get ready to fly to new jersey. >_< i feel really lame. i did get to tour the campus and go to classes and have fun with some other prefrosh though.

Aww its ok... you'll have the opportunity to meet plenty of people at Brown in September (assuming you choose to go there... I hope.) Where in Jersey do u live? There were a bunch of us from across the state... one of the TWW organizers was from Bloomfield (the emcee for the cultural show), and by random chance I ended up meeting a ton of NJ kids. Apparently there's a "Jersey Coalition" in place at Brown...

i'm sorry to post this but I felt the ADOCH wasn't impressive at all comparing to others I went to. Did not feel a warm welcome and didn't really feel it was organized at all. There were so many gaps for you that you basically had nothing to do but keep walking around campus over and over. And worst of all there's no official good bye either. Don't get me wrong, I liked Brown and respect it very much but that ADOCH was a downer sorry to say. I left Brown very disappointed. Do anyone feel the same way or just me???

i'm actually considering other colleges because of adoch...i was also dissapointed

yea i was dissapointed as well. they were just showcasing all their performance groups and extra currics and while those were all very impressive, i still don't have a "feel" for the school other than what ive read in guidebooks

I assumed it was just the "free" approach Brown took... the honest approach, as opposed to dolling everything up to make it seem all peaches and cream.

I loved ADOCH because it wasn't very planned; they let us loose to truly experience what being a student was like.

Everyday students don't get receptions every day nor admin to plan our their schedules.

After all, it was "A Day On College Hill"... as a Brown "student" moreso than as a pre-frosh.

I see both sides of this argument. I thought the gaps in time were very nice - you could wander around campus and see what was going on. Of course, if you don't really like drinking then I could see how you were very bored.

However, I didn't really leave Brown feeling like I should be there. When I walked away from Georgetown's admitted students day in February, I felt like I really wanted to be a Hoya and really felt the school's spirit - and they didn't even mention basketball! So yeah, I was a little disappointed, but it wasn't because it was poorly organized, it just didn't make me feel like Brown was the right place; but then again, maybe Brown just wasn't the right place to begin with.

The one thing I liked about ADOCH when I attended (I'm an 09) is the lack of activity planned. Because, the truth is, at everything I ever went to, the planned events are canned and a load of crap. Being able to wander, talk with students who attended the school, meet people, go to classes, leave when I wanted without feeling obligated, etc was perfect. I left around 1 on ADOCH because I had seen enough, walked to the Admissions Office and dropped off my sheet that I would be attending, and left. Other programs I went to were so canned I had no idea what things are like, but hte openness let me experience what I wanted, when I wanted, as fast as I wanted. I went in knowing plenty about the school, came out confirming the positives, with a slightly different impression, but very comfortable and ready to decide for Brown (though I may have come off deciding against it).

i mean that's the deal with Brown, everything here is open, it's up to you to make it work. ADOCH isn't meant to be the Brown admnistration telling you to come here. It's just them showing Brown to you, and letting you figure out what you need to know about the school, and then deciding to come. It's just like the curriculum, they don't tell you what classes to take, you decide (with help from your advisor) but nonetheless, the ball is in your court when it comes to designing your education for the next 4 years.

I'm not really sure what else you want Brown to show you... ADOCH pretty much gives you the opportunity to visit classes, meet students and prefrosh, meet professors, see a lot of extracurriculars, party, sleep on the green, wander around, eat, pretty much everything that Brown students do. As far as an official goodbye...why say goodbye? A lot (most? I don't remember Brown's yield from last year, but I think it was over 50%) of you will be coming back in a few months, anyway.

Rabo and I_wanna get it. Maybe it a Brown student thing, all of us being 09s, but that's what Brown is-- nothing special at all beyond a good education if you don't seek more out of it. You can get as much or as little out of Brown as you want, truth be told, and if you're not the type that wants to be independent and in control in that sense, then that system may not work for you.
