the official "RATE MY EC" thread

here’s everyone’s chance to post their ECs and have other people rate them from 1-10, with 1 being really bad and 10 being amazing

Varsity Soccer :
Been varsity soccer for 4 years.

Debate:
Will have taken it 3 years by senior year. For states, won honorable mention and 5th place sophomore year. States for junior year: 5th place, and honorable mention as well. my friend only took it for 3 years, but she is marking it down for 4 years. i’m going to covince her not to do that, and if she wont, then I’m going to mark it down for four years too. 10 hours a week

**Drama:**Taking it all four years. principal roles. 18 hours a week

Track: Will have taken it four years by senior year. Qualified for 100 meter dash for states level, as well as high jump. probably going to be track captain. (if I don’t know whether im captain yet, since the season has not started, can i just mark down that i will be captain because its very very likely? like, if i mark it down and track hasn’t even started, will adcoms get suspicious?) 10 hours a week.

5. Gay-straight alliance
Taken it 3 years by senior year. 2 hours a week. im the vice president of GSA at our school.

Volunteer work
6.**Student Guiding Light- **2 years. Help out emotionally wronged students at the high school. About an hour a week. I stopped doing it my senior year.

7.** Help out at the homeless shelter every weekend.** About 150 hours total so far in high school career. 4 years

**Church Youth Group **- Part of a youth group. Help the homeless, etc.
Various other volunteer efforts. 4 years.

Around 250 volunteer hours under belt.

9. Work: Secretary at dental office - 3 years now. 5 hours a week

**designer, owner, and operator of baby-sitting business. **

Rate each of my EC’s from 1-10, with 1 being a lousy EC and 10 being an amazing, noteworthy EC that would catch admissions officer’s eyes.

Overall EC score:**

State why did you give me these ratings? etc, etc.

I hope y’all will do the same so that i can rate your EC’s as well.

I'd say 7-8 because you don't have anything like a research study program or published articles in a newspaper or anything bigger. But you do have lots of experience (4 years with some activities) which is good. EDIT...I don't know...maybe 9 because you have been at state level for a few of those things.

Rate my EC's...

Part-time Job 12 hours a week

...that is all :D

ack . . . taking rating games to a whole new level of nerdiness.

hey, that's what CC is for, right schrizto?

CamaroLover, a job is important and good for work ethic, but surely you do other things in your spare time? I'd give the job alone 3-4 points. If you also had other commitments, then your overall would certainly reach at least 7-8.

I'll get in this game too! (procrastination is a sin, but Rome won't see this)

1) Mock Trial - I founded this in my freshman year and have been either a lawyer or an expert witness for the last 3 years. No one had any prior experience, but we won county championships this year before getting stomped in regionals X(.
2) Amnesty International - Co-founded in sophomore year with some friends, currently a treasurer in it. We hold meetings once a week or so to discuss and promote various civil rights issues happening throughout. However, our school doesn't much like our existence (political organization = no-no)
3) Forensics - I technically co-founded this team in junior year, but the other guy did it for resume purposes and doesn't really care. We're really, really new. Like, 2 tournaments-old new. But we did get $2000 in the budget, and I'm gonna try to get us some wins before I leave this year.
4) Student Government: I've been class vice president since sophomore year. I made a sick speech and I've won every election since then. We've raised $10,000 over the years for senior prom, which is $7,000 more than we need (aka do-what-we-want-money).
5) Newspaper - I'm a political editor and columnist; usually I team up with a friend of mine to debate current issues like censorship or the war in Iraq, etc.

Volunteer:
Hospital: 3 hours a week for about a year. I was pretty much the only volunteer who did actual work--I did a lot of filing and delivering while my co-workers kind of sat around.

Intern: I interned full time (40 hours/week) at a county courthouse for most of August. I did what the employees didn't want to do (everything).

I also self-studied several math courses and chemistry in freshman and sophomore years, but that's not really exciting.

Whoo.

Are you serious?

I'm only a junior, but here it goes;

First the easier ones:
1. Student Government: Vice President
2. Model UN: Vice President
3. Key Club: Webmaster
4. Math league: Secretary
5. Cross Country - JV

More Focused Ones;

Co-President/Co-Founder of a volunteer group that plays music @ places

Co-Founder/Co-President of my school's Young Democrats
I'm a national officer too for this, helping do national stuff, but im not saying for confidentiality reasons, since you could just google my position and find me. =P

State Youth Council for something else. Smaller position, state level/local level in a way, depends

Since I'm a junior, count on me gaining one or two more presidencies for local clubs by senior year, even though i might not decide to run since its not really that important of an ec, but hopefully a higher position on the national level for the party

^I'd give you a 7-8, since you have a lot of offices and founderships. ^_^

Choir-4 years. Participated in the Jamestown 2007 anniversary choir (1607 members), an all-California competition in San Francisco (we go every year, it's mostly NorCal groups though, we're almost always the only SoCal group), various local performances (NOTE: all these are as part of a group).

Spring Musical-4 years. Understudy Junior year, and most likely a lead this year (official as of December).

Womens' Varsity Golf-3 years. Scholar Athlete all 3 years, Most Dedicated Player 11th grade.

GirlsTalk Club-Co Chair 3 years.

Cultural Assembly Committee 1 year.

DaCapo (voice) club-2 years.

Church Worship Team-3 years.

PEACE Academy (my smaller learning community) treasurer 9th grade, Co-President 12th grade.

ELEVATE (the Senior Project that we do) Budget and Funding Subcommittee Chair Alternate.

parkrunner..
my friend's dad is an adcom (not at a very good college but whatever) and he was telling me that they are often suspicious of people who have such a huge volume of ecs. i mean your ecs alone add up to over 50 hours a week and then plus like 35 hours of school a week that only leaves you like 80 hours each week to do homework and sleep?
i'm not even going to doubt that because i know a lot of cc kids are crazy but just giving you a heads up that adcoms (at least some) get a good laugh about kids who write down that much stuff. now i have a lot of ecs too so i don't really know what i'm going to do because its not like i'm going to just not include some of them but this guy definitely told me that it sends up a huge red flag when people just have longg lists (like either that they lied about their ecs and/or time commitments or that they just don't have a life.. hah i don't know, just passing on some info i found..

Well I think my EC's will become a hook/ a 10 in my 12th grade though If I'm elected to a higher national office, since theres only so few of us in the world and the ivies seem to like to attract national officers. Sorry if im sounding arrogant, lol, >_<

Around a 6.5 Impressive ECs but no relation to one another.

I would say they are pretty much related to each other.
Forensics, Politics, and Activism are pretty much related...

RATE??

Are the ratings supposed to be in tier 1 admissions context?

Protege: 10 if this were the regular world, probably 6-7 from the skewed CC perspective.

Great thread idea, OP.

Ideal predictions of my ECs for the next four years:

Speech and Debate
- Speech team member (4 years, 6 hours per week, 1/2 school year)

Did I just get skipped??

EDIT I just rated somebody but apparently three more people posted while I was typing up my own list, so...

EDIT2
Sak--5-6 for most of your activities--they're impressive in themselves but you haven't really shown extensive passion for any one of them.

mj93--6-7 for all of them except for debate, 7-9 for debate depending on what actually happens, but I think you should expand your horizons a little.

Mine:
1. Model UN
- Director-General of one of the most competitive programs in the state (we recieve honors credit for Model UN as if it were a class)
- Been to conferences every fall and spring since sophomore year
- Won awards in every conference (including Best Delegate, Distinguished Delegate, etc.)
- Accepted into an application committee for Harvard MUN this coming December
- Designed the website (not very relevant =P)

2. Marching Band
- 4-year member
- Saxophone/Woodwind section leader
- Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championships Bronze Finalists for 2005, 2006
- "Superior" rating and silver medal at Festival Disney 2007
- Best Visual at USSBA Yamaha Cup 2007

3. American Civil Liberties Union
- President
- We do political stuff and raise awareness about civil liberties. Loads of fun.

4. We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution
- Competition is later in the year
- Our school has been national champions at least 5 times, including a "three-peat" in 2004, 2005, and 2006
- State champions 18 years out of 19 I think

5. Model Congress
- Been to three conferences, won awards in two (Best Representative, Best Position Paper)

6. Jazz Band
- I've been 1st alto sax in the past and I'm 1st tenor sax now
- We play a number of shows but we don't really compete or anything

7. Volunteering at a University hospital nearby
- 200 hours of refilling water pitchers, filing papers, and sorting silverware

8. Future Business Leaders of America
- We made it to Euro Challenge semifinals last year, but due to the fact that we couldn't go because 4 out of 5 team members had to go to a Model UN conference, our FBLA advisor no longer lets Model UN people do anything. Ah well, his loss.

9. Merck State Science Day
- I decided to do something different. As a school, we ended up coming in 1st in the state for the Integrated test

10. Miscellaneous
- I do graphics and web design in my spare time. Officially, I'm a freelance web designer but nobody really hires me.
- I've played keyboard and sax for various rock bands
- I was rejected from NHS! Whooo...

Speechless

But aren't you the same person who was super competitive with comparing your stats with your friend's stats which your friend apparently bloated?
