The Official "should I retake" Thread

@meatloafman995 i think um you shld take/retake depending on what your ideal college’s ranges are. i mean for me, stanford is like WAY OFF for me so i have t retake??! but i fit nicely into berkeley’s range. so something like that. that’s how i decide!

for a fairly competitive school, are these good? I know i can do better - i went in pretty cold, first time taking SAT I, barely any prep at all. I’m looking at a wide range of schools - from my state school to BU to Johns Hopkins to Penn:

750 CR
720 M
690 WR

so a 2160
should i retake? for each level of school please :)

2270
CR: 710 (■■■)
Math: 760
Writing: 800

I am gonna retake considering I fail at reading.

Prussia- I wouldn’t retake it. 2280 and 2300 don’t really have a difference. And to hyps essays and recommendations matter more than a 20 point sat increase.

Bilgun- If you’ve already practiced a ton, I’m sorry I don’t think you’ll improve a lot more. You’re scores are well rounded… I think that suggests that you’re reaching your max ability… My .02

Mabs- I think you’re fine honestly. A 760 math can be overlooked because it’s like2 careless errors and it’s not bad. And a 710 reading isn’t that bad. Unless you want to go to Columbia or something… But even then I think the sat 2 lit would help more

Redthe- idk I’ll let someone else answer you.

M800, R800, W690

I know it’s an excellent score, but the writing annoys me :frowning:
Would it be worth it to attempt a higher superscore? I already took it twice, I told myself I would stop taking SATs once I hit 2300. But I hit 2290 … so I’m on uncertain ground right now.

anything above 2200+ is satisfactory for HYP right?
haha i hate to be doubting, but w/e i dont care, even if it isnt, im happy with my 2230 :)

redthe–I would retake. For Ivies you really want a 2250+ score.

Prussia–I did (same score as you first time), but if you don’t want to, I wouldn’t bother. You’re in the range, and the difference between a 2280 and a 2300 is really only psychological. Unless you are unsatisfied/feel like you could do better on a certain section, there’s really not much point. I mean, it’s a four hour test–do you really want to sit through that again?

meatloaf–it really can’t hurt. The fact that you increased your score by so much just by taking it again indicates that you could potentially raise it by a lot more if you studied. Really, the SAT is a skill just like anything else: it can be learned. Buy a prep book, do practice tests, and I’m pretty sure you’ll see your CR improve.

800 CR, 710 M, 800 W (2310 total)

I have taken the SAT I three times already. Should I retake it again to improve my math score or will I look like a test taking psycho if I take it for a 4th time? for HYPS

oh and I got a 740 on the math II…don’t know if that makes up for the SAT I math

This is my second time and I got a 2300

M 770
CR 730
W 800

I’m very happy with this score since it was a 320 point improvement from my first time, so basically my first score was useless. But the thing is, for math i made 2 extremely CARELESS mistakes and I know I’m capable of an 800…so, should I take it a third time in october to bump Math score up? Does a 2330 superscore look better than a 2300 from one sitting?

Thanks in advance~~

haavain: Thanks. So for the ivy I would want to retake - but if I was interested, in say, JHU, would my score be fine? October I need to take Math II and Lit, so a higher score wouldn’t be possible for early decision (not that I’m necessarily applying JHU early dec.). I can take the ACT though… never taken that yet.

ugghhh
I got a 2240
800 w
730 cr (-50!!!) (I accelerated english at my school which is never done and took AP Lit, had the highest grade as a junior in my senior class. WHAT THE HELL.)
710 m (+50)

I’m applying to Brown ED so I very obviously have to retake
But does it really matter that much… it’s just that 1430/1600 seems pretty awful for someone who got an 80 on her psat for cr.

I got 2090. I am 100% going to retake, because I got 215 on the PSAT and I need to at least match that for National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist. Wow…why am I so pathetic on the SAT?

I got 33 on the ACT last fall…I got 33 on the ACT this summer. Should I retake it?

redthe–you’re in range for JHU, as far as SAT scores go (writing is on the lower end, but that’s generally the least important section anyway). If you have a weakness in some other area–GPA, course rigor, ECs, etc.–I would retake, otherwise it’s really up to you. If you think you can improve your SAT writing or do better on your ACT, and you’re willing to sit through another four-hour test, then go ahead. If not, well.

I retook a 2280, though, even though it was in range for all the colleges I was looking at, so I might not be the best person to ask. (I tend to get a bit obsessive sometimes, haha.)

I got a 2100 this time…should I retake? The first time i took it in January I got a 1770 (CR 550 M 650 W 570). I did a bunch of studying this time and got W 700 CR 680 M 720. I plan on applying to Duke (ED/RD not sure), UVA (in state), Georgia Tech, Case Western, and others for Engineering. I still feel like I can maybe pull a 2200+ superscored. My GPA is kind-of low (4.00 10-pt scale UW/ 3.625 7-pt scale), so should I retake??

Thanks in advance.

Please don’t tease me for debating retaking this. I got an 800V, 700M, 800W on my second try taking the SAT and was wondering if I should retake just because the rest will be superscored. I’m not applying to HYPSM but I’m trying for some scholarships at top tier universities and applying to Brown, so I was wondering if my scores are competitive enough. I want to be an english professor or journalist, so I was thinking I wouldn’t need to retake because I’m not going to use math anyway, but the people on college confidential practically beat themselves up for 2290s, so I just wanted to double-check if this score is competitive enough.

i got a 2270 overall (800 M, 720 Cr, and 750 WR). should i retake for HYPSM? also, i am doing a manual score check because i think i may not have erased completely for some of the CR questions, which could have affected my score. in any case, retake?? thnx

prismatic: you just beat all of america

2340: 740 CR, 800 on Math and Writing. First time. Homeschooled, taking Lit this autumn.

Should I retake?

The urban dictionary college confidential stereotype really starts to kick in around SAT scores time xD

^What d’you mean? :D

Granted, they’re good scores, but I am applying to HYPSM and other top colleges, as an international requiring FA.
