The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@ucastell‌

The group it’s part of (Biological Sciences) has a 23.1% acceptance rate for transfers. About average for Berkeley.

@ucastell‌

No, it’s not impacted.

@Loyshi‌

It’s very active, after all it is home to the Free Speech Movement :slight_smile: . I hear the events and protests are mostly in Sproul Plaza. But I’ve only visited in calmer times.

@Loyshi, I think I’ve seen that website before, but I can’t help but to be nervous haha. The only good thing about next friday is that I will be hanging out with all my friends at an amusement park, so worst case scenario I will have their moral support haha :slight_smile: Thank you for the link! :)

@ocnative‌

I am, somewhat. I consider myself very left-wing. I’m a registered democrat, but the Democratic Party isn’t liberal enough in my opinion. I’m not a socialist, but I certainly like several aspects of socialism as it is practiced in Europe, namely Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Let’s just say that I’d fit right in with the United States Green Party.

Unlike so many students at Berkeley, however, I wouldn’t disparage someone just because their beliefs differ from mine. I have and have had a few Republican friends in my life and I’ve had amicable debates with them over political issues. I’ve heard quite a few horror stories at Berkeley, lol. But they’re probably exaggerated somewhat.

@Loyshi‌

Berkeley is known for being very, very liberal. In fact, many people first learn about Berkeley in their high school or college U.S. history classes when studying the Vietnam War and public reaction to it during the 1960s. Berkeley students staged massive protests in opposition to the Vietnam War even before the public had come to oppose it and at a time when national support for the war was fairly high.

Nowadays, it’s known for having many(Not most or all) students who are liberal and many of them are intolerably liberal in the sense that they express hostility towards those who are conservative-leaning. Some people who’ve gone to the school report moving to the political right in revulsion to some of the very left-wing students there.

@Loyshi‌

I am down with hearing about tricks! I wouldn’t be one to try them, but at least it would put some energy into this thread. I would take UCSD’s thread anyday lol.

@ocnative‌

A revive would be nice! I’m not like super political myself, but if anything I’m more liberal than conservative, so I think I might enjoy the political atmosphere. I’m not going to be like tree hugging or anything like that, but it might be a refreshing environment. Even if I was conservative, I would still want to go there. What about you?

@music1990, thank you for the link :slight_smile:

To be honest even if Berkeley is known for being very involved in politics etc, I wouldn’t mind because being there on Cal day truly made me realize how much I truly wanted to go there. I just can’t describe it haha.

Why do you guys think that Berkeley is so well known internationally? I was looking at some article not long ago, and Berkeley is number 3 after Harvard and Stanford in terms of prestige around the world! I was just very surprised considering Berkeley is a private school!

I’m sorry I meant to say public school haha

@Cayton‌
It’s ironic that i should have learn about that in US history in HS or college. I skipped Junior History in HS by taking a cc class my freshman year… As you can see, I learn nothing in that class and walk out with an A. (not complaint though) But I think what you wrote is enough to fill that gap that’s been missing.

@music1990‌
I mentioned about the summer session trick, but it doesn’t make sense for others to try the trick considering it 8 days away. Basically you sign up for summer session, get a Calnet ID in about 10 days. Then check your financial aid using your ID to see if you have a 2014-15 pull down menu and see if they provide your cost of attendance (It’s $32,068 by the way) This will work for anyone who happens to have a Calnet ID from previous summer session or concurrent enrollment.

@ucastell‌

Berkeley is so well known because their faculty is amazing in every field imaginable. They have more top-10 ranked departments than any other school in the country, even Harvard. In fact, if you google “English rankings” or psychology rankings" you’ll find that Berkeley is routinely in the top 5 and is often #1 in its field.

They’ve also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, medicine, and science in general. They’re also fantastic at history, English, and other humanities fields. In fact, they’re #1 in the country for English and history. They’re also #1 in computer science, chemistry, and a whole bunch of other fields.

It’s also worth noting that it was the first and oldest UC school, and the UC system has been generously funded for a long time(Even in a time when the UCs have experienced budget cuts, they continue to excel). With age comes prestige and Berkeley is old. Not only is it old, but it’s been nurtured to the point that it competes with the Ivy leagues in terms of graduate school prestige.

7 days, 18 hours, 20 minutes, 40 seconds…7 days, 18 hours, 20 minutes, 39 seconds…7 days, 18 hours, 20 minutes, 38 seconds…7 days, 18 hours, 20 minutes, 37 seconds…

@music1990‌

I would love the political atmosphere and I consider myself very liberal :stuck_out_tongue: so it’s perfect honestly…haha.

@ucastell‌

Where is this interesting article?

:)

@anothertransfer‌
I think you might need to another 12 hours to the countdown. It’s happening at around 5pm, not am. I would prefer it to be at 5am though :((

@ocnative‌
It’s just the pdf file of transfer admission for berkeley

@Loyshi :)) I noticed that just after I posted it! lol Wishful thinking? [-O<

@anothertransfer‌
The only reason i caught that… is because I too have a timer counting down the seconds till we spill tears of joy or sorrow on that day

@Loyshi Imagine the 2 hours before 5pm April 25th… or 1 hour before… or 30 minutes! Oh, the agony of waiting! :((

Wow. Sometimes I wish I could be as excited about Berkeley as the rest of you guys. :frowning: But I’m related to someone who currently attends the school and she kinda ruined it for me. Sigh.

@anavera‌

What’s your first choice?

@anavera‌

How?

@ocnative probably UCSD. But we’ll see how I feel if I get accepted to LA or Berkeley.

@Cayton Well it’s not so much she ruined the image of the school for me. More like, I really can’t stand her sometimes. She’s generally a good person, but oh jesus she is such an insufferable elitist. She’s talked ■■■■ about many of the other UCs over the years, especially UCLA (lol, she’s bitter because she got rejected from there). She’s even said to me before that “no one cares about Irvine.” Yeah I know, she’s kind of a b*tch. And she loves bringing up how Berkeley is the best all the time, as if I needed a reminder.

So yeah, I know if I go to Berkeley I will probably have to see her all the time and I will completely lose my mind if that happens.

But then I start to feel kind of petty because this is probably a really dumb reason for not wanting to go to Berkeley if given the chance lol. Not to say that I’m not still seriously considering Cal. I’m just less excited as a result. =/
