The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@CompSciUCTrnsfr‌

My Major GPA is 3.55 lol. didn’t do so well my first few semesters. but for the past 3 semesters i’ve had only one B and the rest A’s in my major courses.

Yeah my backup is probably UCSD, but I got into Revelle College… ugh… haha

I am very interested in the EE side of things! Having a blast in my electromagnetism course right now. Sitting at a 99% in the course! It’s fun stuff!

I wish more universities offered EECS. I was planning on trying to double major EE and CS at UCSD if I don’t get into Cal, but I’m not sure if they will let me do that. If that doesn’t work out, then I guess I just have to do CSE.

Good luck, everyone!

Everyone! When decisions come out, remember to put your result along with all your stats, so that we can help out future transfers.

Me “working” today is a complete joke. Good luck everybody! :)

@emilynicole83‌ lol! I just finished one math problem and I feel so productive…not

Sitting in lecture hall… not listening at all lol

3.54 here miraculously got into LA.
Cal is going to be a stretch, but I hope for the best.

Good luck to everyone!

How do you guys go about calculating your major gpa? Is it just the classes/courses listed on assist specific to your major?

How would you guys rate the difficulty of Berkeley’s comp sci courses compared to generic CC comp sci courses? I just read somewhere that CS150 is a nightmare and bunch of students this year got caught cheating on one of the comp sci 61 classes…so I am a bit concerned.

Also, good luck to you all.

Today’s the moment of truth. 4 more hours. Damm it seems so unreal that today’s the day. This year, week, day went by unbelievably fast.

@jonjon03‌ I can only speak for my CC, but from what I’ve seen online, the Berkeley CS courses are significantly more rigorous and time consuming–which is what I’d expect from one of the world’s greatest CS departments.

Are the majority of everyone on here who applied to cal also going to SIR with them? I saw a few who will not. As for me, I am not 100% sure which UC right now. Obviously there are a lot of factors in deciding which UC we all go to.

@noisnotananswer I was assuming it to be. I see that if I do get into Berkeley I would have a great opportunity, but with that comes a greater chance of my gpa not being as great. I wouldn’t shy away from a challenge, but if my future outlook looks better with a +3.5 gpa from UCLA than a +3.0 gpa from UCB then it would seem better to attend UCLA instead. Though, it would be hard to dismiss a chance to study at one of the top schools for comp sci. Also, thanks for the reply.

@globeneon Same here, got into LA with 3.5. If I would’ve been rejected from LA I don’t think would’ve been too hopeful for Berkeley.

Best of luck peeps!!

@jonjon03‌

There isn’t much evidence that Berkeley is harder to get good grades at than at UCLA, contrary to popular belief. :P

Computer science at Berkeley is probably as hard as computer science at UCLA and vice-versa. :)

its after 4 pm in NY and every time I see that we have until 5pm till release I keep forgetting the time difference… i get excited then anxious again!

@mr401k Even though Cal has the number one program in the nation for my major, I will most likely SIR to UCLA because I love its campus/general atmosphere. But who knows? If Cal deigns to accept me and gives me money to attend, it might sway my decision. But I doubt that I’ll even be accepted though…don’t feel competitive enough…OH WHO CARES? I’ll just go to UCLA if rejected…I like LA better anyway.

@amputee CSE is a good compromise between EE and CS. If you like E&M then I think you would really like EE courses. I’m taking a circuits class this semester and I am really enjoying it. Working on my final project right now, I’m building a audio phaser like the ones used in a guitar pedal. Good luck and I hope we get to see each other if we end up at the same school.

@jonjon03‌ Honestly, you probably shouldn’t worry too much about GPA. Go where you think you will flourish more (both educationally and personally). In a field like Computer Science, grades mean next to nothing (unless you’re going for grad school, of course). People without college degrees get top jobs all the time. It’s about what you know, not your pedigree.

Overall GPA: 3.57
UC Transferable GPA: 3.94
Major Prereq GPA: 4.0
Grade Trend: 1.91 in the First semester (academic probation) upwards to 3.57 by the end of my 5th semester.
Major: Geography
EC:
-Full time Student / Full time Employee
-Phi Theta Kappa
-Travel nut (China, South Korea, Australia, All over the U.S.)
-English Peer Tutor at my CC’s Learning Center
Personal Statement: Overall pretty good with the people I had look over it (Counselor, a few of my co-workers at the learning center, and my favorite English professor).
Schools Applied: UC Davis (TAG), UCLA (accepted), Berkeley (Pending)
Residency: Bay Area, California
Ethnicity: Korean-American

Additional Notes:
First generation to work towards a bachelor’s degree.
“Older” Student as I just turned 25 on 4/22.
I’ve been looking over these forums as many of you have but only decided to write something because a previous poster stated:

“Everyone! When decisions come out, remember to put your result along with all your stats, so that we can help out future transfers.” -noisnotananswer

I completely agree.

I’ll post whether or not I get accepted. Good luck to all of you. There are a lot of great folks here (I think) and I hope that only good things ever happen to you all. Stay beautiful!

@Cayton So I guess I’m doubly screwed^^ We I guess that kind of settles the decision though.

@noisnotananswer Thanks for the encouragement. It’s just after taking all these computer science classes I have taken at CC it seems I haven’t learned that much. I’m barely getting comfortable with using priority queues, linked lists, and basically easier stuff from data structures.

If I do get in, declaring my major seems a bit difficult. I am looking forward to taking CS 61A, CS 61C, EECS 42, EECS 43, and CS 47B by the end of Fall semester. Guess I have to take summer classes for CS 61A and CS 61C to make it possible.

I too would post my stats, accepted or not. Last couple of years this was my goto site to figure things out regarding transfer, and would like to help future transfer students in some way.

@jonjon03‌

Just remember to hit the ground running. Computer science is hard, I know, but if you study hard from day one, you should be fine.
