@techmom, I laughed about your moustache, I, too, have hair on my lip, although it seems to be much thinner and sparser than when I was young. I hot waxed all the time, until I noticed after a few decades it was causing my skin to be darker right above my lips. I read that can happen with regular use, so I started going to a threading shop which was great. They aren’t in business now, and I’m too lazy to drive to the mall, so now I pluck about once a week. Before vacations, I go ahead and wax,
lasers can cause hyperpigmentation with my skin type, so I’m stuck.
I sadly love this post : ) Yes, I take forever as well. I am 48 and two years ago my hormones took a long walk off a short pier. It all went down hill and I basically lost all my hair…eyelashes included so yes thank you…I will use the latisse and not go eyelashLESS even though i am married. lol I got hair extensions to help but even now those are not enough sadly. Perhaps, I should go with no hair? Let it happen because it is hormonal and partially genetic my mother suffers from this also. I can’t fight it. Who wants my European wax center membership??? lol
I don’t spend money on fancy creams. I am saving money and treating myself to filling the giant sunken temples that I have. Another lovely thing that comes with aging over the last year. With no hair and a long skinny face my head now looks like a peanut and that is not pretty.
Fight the fight ladies or don’t but supporting each other always makes us look our best.
I just want to make it clear that I don’t consider my self superior because my skin is decent without products but lucky.
I don’t knock anyone who does have a face prep regime - but I could/would never spent the $$$ on it myself.
There may be other things that I spend my $ on that others would frown at.
I grew up with a mom who spent hours in the sun, used Ponds if I remember on her face - and that’s all and who wore no make up except for some red lipstick when she went out. Make up never played a part of my teens or adulthood except for a little mascara to work, powder blush in the winter and Burt’s Bees conditioning color on my lips. I probably could look a little more polished if I did but also, I would hate having a regime where I would apply stuff everyday.
My choice, but it’s not a “right” choice - just right for me.
Different strokes I guess. This and the makeup thread both have me in amazement. I’m 59 and my nighttime routine is still just wash my face and brush my teeth. I also have never worn any makeup ever. It sounds like I’ve saved a lot of money over the years. I do wear sunscreen because I burn very easily - red hair and very pale skin - but that’s all I’ve ever bothered with.
My nearly blind 99 year old mother lives with us. Although she can’t remember what she had for dinner or who her grandchildren are, every morning and evening she uses ponds on her face and aveeno on her hands. Can’t be vanity at this point, maybe a routine she remembers or maybe because it feels good.
No reason inner beauty can’t be enhanced with good skin care!
I wear make up about half the time. It lasts forever because I use so little, and it is probably culturing all kinds of bacteria.
I use make up for one reason: when I’m out and about people treat me better when I have a little make up on and have spent some time grooming. Sad, but true in my experience. Thankfully, I spend more time with dogs than people.
I started coloring my roots a few years ago because my gray comes in in clumps and it looked funny with my very dark hair. I could be Cruella Deville if I let it go. I now have blond streaks in the front so it doesn’t look as obvious when my gray comes in. This is the most glamorous style I’ve ever had. My daughter called me “edgy.” I didn’t know if that was good or bad, but I guess it’s not terrible. Lol.
I floss and brush every night without fail and I hate flossing more than anything… I brush in the morning, too, and any time before I leave the house.
I usually use a generic cetaphil-type face cleanser and an inexpensive moisturizer at night…and I use something with a sunscreen for the day. I’ve used Aldi Lacura, Neutragena, Cerave, and store brands.
Right now I’m putting on a Walmart knock off of Olay’s regeneration serum after cleansing because I noticed things going downhill after I ran out of the Lancôme moisturizer my teen got me for my birthday ran out. She must have worked many hours to buy that stuff and it was worth every minute. WOW! That made an incredible difference in my skin. It just made it glow.
I’m 50 and recently people have told me I look like I’m in my thirties. It could be genetics but it’s hard to tell because my female relatives smoke and have sunbathed all their lives. I avoid sun on my face, don’t smoke, exercise, and eat healthy. I feel like eating green leafy vegetables everyday may have helped my skin as much as anything. I think someone should do a study on that.
Blotchy redness and some hyperpigmentation on the upper lip and from past breakouts, plus minor current breakouts.
If I use a color corrector concealer and then light foundation, it’s a MUCH more attractive “natural” look.
I also like to get a tan in the summer. I don’t lay out, but I rarely use sunscreen. I don’t get super duper dark, but I do enjoy how a tan evens out my skin and I’m less reliant on concealer and foundation.
Looking older and more wrinkled isn’t one of my hot buttons though. I have other buttons thankyouverymuch!
I do love Cetaphil facial wash, which is helping me break the Ponds Wipes habit I’ve developed.
I have Invisalign, and it has GREATLY improved my flossing. 3x a day. At least! Let’s hope the new habit sticks once they are removed.
Brush teeth, mouthwash, floss, wash face with Purity, cetaphil lotion, eye cream sample if I have one?, systane balance eyedrops, biotene mouth spray, ponaris nasal oil, latisse, I probably should have something for the other opening but lets be real… who has the time. …I’m exhausted after that. I usually break it down into 2 sessions…before Netflix and after!
I wash my face and neck with cold water (no soap or any lotions unless I had some makeup on which I rarely use), lightly dry it with a towel and apply my favorite Chanel cream. I know too well that the beauty claims they make do not hold any water, but I like the smell and the feel on my face. If I run out of it, I use Olay. Both come from Costco. I do not use creams with SPF unless I am out and about in the sun for a meaningful amount of time. Instead, I apply sunblock. Or use the separate SPF thingy sold by Chanel.
I strongly advise against buying any beauty products from resellers on Amazon or some hole in the wall resellers.
I wear mascara, blush and lip gloss occasionally. My acne and oily skin finally resolved with menopause, which is why I never used face products in my younger years. My chemo thins out my skin and makes me frightfully pale, so I am loath to add stress to it with using products. Am lucky that I haven’t developed wrinkles yet at 58. I do get eyebrows and upper lip done, and I get my hair colored. It’s not completely gray, but what isn’t is dreadfully drab and washes me out.
I’m happy to get sun on my face in the summer. It makes me look younger and more vital.
True confessions: I’m 49 and I’ve got the same routine as I’ve always had at night. NOTHING! People are always aghast since I definitely do wear some makeup. I’m just so tired at night and couldn’t ever make this routine stick. That said, I must be lucky with my Northern Euro genes, too, because I get crazy compliments about my skin. Makes me think 2 things:
• I always wonder how much better my skin would be if I had/did wash my face every night
• Maybe washing your face isn’t really that important at night
I def DO use good skin care products (moisturizer and serum) for my eyes and face during the day ; )
I posted this on another thread, but after an eye opening conversation with my dermatologist, my nightly routine is MUCH simpler and my skin is better than ever (OK, not better than my 20s or early 30s. But better than 35+ when I’ve been trying all kinds of anti aging stuff)! She recommended prescription hydroquinone for age spots/uneven tone, and prescription Retin A for fine lines. Only moisturize if needed, with “any old moisturizer.” Skip face washing in morning and just rinse. My face looks great with this simplified routine and I LOVE not searching out anti aging products any more. As she said, anything anti-aging that you buy in stores, whether cheap or expensive, has a fraction of what these prescription things do and not nearly the results. I buy the prescriptions online/Canada and they are very reasonable. It’s amazing! At night, wash with any basic cleanser, put on the Retin A and later, the hydroquinone. In the morning, rinse, put on hydroquinone, then a facial sunscreen. That’s it! Coconut oil on any dry patches during winter but I don’t really get that any more now that I don’t wash in the am.
@Lassie3 you bring up a great point about hands! I always put suncscreen on my hands now, daily just like my face, and at time put my (very limited) facial prescriptions on them.
@mom517 would love to hear more about your nasal oil. My DH has bad allergies and my son has frequent nosebleeds! Thx!
I put a lot of stuff on my face, both in the morning and at night. I also do home facial with mask. I use heavy cream on my hands before I go to bed. I know most of my Asian friends use a lot of products. My mother is very frugal, but she spends quite a bit on creams. She used to tell me, “You only have one face.”
I don’t use foundation or a lot of makeup. One piece of makeup I like is Boy Brow by Glossier. I don’t have much of eye brows. I use it like mascara on my brows and they look very natural.
I enjoy reading everybody’s way of treating our skin (face for the most part). I wear very light make up, just powder and lipstick so my cleaning routine is simple. 15 years ago, my daughter’s dermatologist (she is very well respected in our area) suggested that we, my daughter and I, use Cetaphil. So, Cetaphil it is.
I use Cetaphil skin cleanser instead of soap (for face and body). I use Cetaphil moisturizer lotion for body, sometimes my face, too.
After washing my face (either with Cetaphil or just water) in the morning, I use Neutrogena daily moisturizer with sunscreen (SPF 50). At night, after washing my face, I use cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil as facial moisturizer. I am almost 60 years old. People often say I don’t look it at all (maybe, they are polite or need new glasses!!).
My sister who is 62, has very youthful skin. Her secret is avoiding direct sunlight whenever possible. She almost always wears a long-sleeved blouse and carries an umbrella. She has protected her skin this way since her teen years. She is a living proof of how skin could be so youthful when one minimizes sun damage. She does not wear make up and uses mild soap to wash her face.
Seeing how good her skin looks, I’ve been more vigilant in wearing sunscreen and hat outdoors these past several years.
@oldfort Boy Brow is a great product. A lot of the Glossier products are excellent and not as well known. I love the sheer eye shadows and the light foundation/tinted moisturizer.
I could never not wash my face in the morning since I run almost every morning and I’m gross and sweaty.
I have a number of acquaintances who have had serious skin cancers and painful treatments due to sun exposure. I did a lot of pool and beach tanning into my 30s but finally got smart about sunscreen. Living in the south, I’m diligent about my face- even on days of just incidental sun exposure. There are so many good light formulas just for faces now that there really is no reason not to use them. It’s not at all like it used to be with thick, greasy white stuff.
