The ONLY person at my school applying early decision!?!

I'm applying to rice university and i was wondering what it looks like to admissions seeing as I'm the only one taking that sort of initiative at my school? I'm also the only one who's turned in an application there. My scores are a bit low but I made the highest score at my school along with 4 other girls on the ACT a 25 :(. I also have a 3.65 and I'm black. Our school is pretty bad unless you go and make your own way which ive done by taking classes at a local university. Let me know thanks

That may increase your chances, but most likely not enough. Hopefully you prove me wrong though.

Increase my chances? on what grounds do you think. And I wonder how id prove you wrong lol

A 25 ACT is way too low. You would need a 30 just to have a chance and a 32+ would be most desirable. Don’t give up though anything can happen. Apply and good luck!

Oh i my host for my overnight stay had a 27 act so idk maybe other great stuff factord into her app and thank you comments like that always help

You’d prove me wrong by receiving an acceptance letter.

Always look at the Common Data Set for any school to which you are applying. Section C tell you how you compare to accepted students the prior year. At Rice, some 15% of students with ACT scores of 29 or less were accepted so it does happen and the applicant has a hook in this case.

lol I wonder if they were all athletes, though my overnight host wasnt ANd based on another post i posted what do you think my hook could be? i really dont understand hooks who has them and I have never done anything drastically life changing or even big not out of my school. Right now i am running my schools book club with no sponsor :frowning: thats pretty much it

Students are evaluated based on how they compare to all applicants but also to how they compare to those at their own school. Don’t let anyone take the wind out of your sails on the one hand, but do your reserarch and be realistic on the other hand. A hook can be as simple as being the first from your school, being an under represented minority, being a first generation in a family to go to college. Not all hooks are of students who knew by age ten that they wanted to bring about world peace and went on to invent a solution to world hunger! Believe in your self and do a lot of research to know how to best present your story. Do you have a college counselor at school who can help with that?
