The Oxford Thread: Questions and Conversation

We attended an accepted students event Friday at Oxford, and admissions officials told us that the school had 4,000 applicants this year, with a 43 percent admit rate. The average SAT is 1290, ACT 28, GPA, 3.64 (This compares to 2010 figures: 3,873, 59 percent, and 3.5 GPA). Increase of about 30 pts. on SAT and 1 on ACT, based on 2010-11 figures.

This means that they admitted 560 fewer students. I checked with an admissions counselor after the presentation who said the college had overadmitted last year and was scaling back.

The school has also reached the point in selectivity where they quit worrying about “building a class and start sculpting one.” She expected that, because they were more conservative in admissions, admissions officials would be more likely to use rolling admissions and the waitlist to fill the class. In fact, there were some waitlisted students at the event that day. So there is some hope for those on the waitlist and those applying to Oxford after being denied at Emory main.

Quick question about professors and grading…I have read in a lot of places that the classes at Emory are really hard and it is tough to get good grades. Yesterday, I checked Ratemyprof for Emory and there were tons of reviews saying that the class is ridiculous and it is impossible to get an A, the curve was bad, etc. As someone who wants to go through with the Pre-med track, this really concerns me - is this true? Anybody here who is doing pre-med that thinks it’s not that bad?
Thanks,

For those who are waitlisted, who’s submitting their deposit at Oxford just in case they dont get called off Emory’s waitlist?

Is it possible to participate in clubs/ activites at the main campus in Atlanta if the equivalent does not exist at Oxford college?

do the professors at the oxford campus only work there, or do they work part-time at the atlanta campus as well?

Did any body get an acceptance or admitted student handbook in the mail from oxford college of emory or emory college?

My son applied EA and received an acceptance letter and admitted student handbook back in December. The letter was also posted on OPUS.

Well how did I get in? 28 ACT? Unless they superscored mine, then I’d have a 29, but I doubt it…

And my gpa…lol…don’t even want to talk about it…although I am in top 10%…but it’s no where close to a 3.64

Remember, these are admitted-students stats (not enrolling-students stats). At effectively every school, the admitted-students stats are higher than the enrolling-students stats (because many of the most competitive applicants will choose to go elsewhere due to prestige, money, fit, etc.).

Also, if the average ACT is a 28, then half the students who submitted an ACT score submitted a lower score. I’d imagine that, in terms of stats, Oxford looks a lot like this: students who receive merit scholarships with high test scores/great grades, students with very high test scores and lower GPAs, and students with lower test scores and very high GPAs.

Oh ok. Can we apply for merit scholarships next year?

Yes. The catalog, which I’ve been obsessively looking through for several months, mentions many named scholarships. Though, I’m not sure how large each one is.

D elected to submit her application Oxford but also to remain on the Emory waitlist. If she gets offered admission to Oxford, does that delete her spot on the Emory waitlist? I thought the initial email said it didn’t affect it, but now I’m not sure…

The admissions processes are completely independent. If she is offered admission to Oxford, that fact, in and of itself, does not affect her waitlist status at the Atlanta campus.

^thanks. She was offered admission at Oxford yesterday (yay!). I found out that if she accepts by putting down a deposit at Oxford by May 1, then she would be removed from the Emory waitlist. So the question is: deposit at Oxford and remain on WL at other schools (but not Emory), or deposit at a different school, give up Oxford, and remain on WL at other schools (including Emory). She’ll be visiting soon and then can decide.

Where’d you hear that if she puts down a deposit at Oxford, she’d be removed from the Emory waitlist? I’ve never heard that before.

Assuming that’s true, I guess it’ll come down to where else she’s received offers and how much she likes Emory/Oxford.

where did you hear that from? I am in the same boat, but the wait list is not guarenteed, are you willing to give up oxford for a chance at emory?

re: where I heard it from – I asked my daughter’s GC to contact Emory and find out what their policy is. She called me back; said she’d spoken to Emory admissions office, and they said that if D accepted a spot at Oxford, she would automatically be removed from the Emory WL.

GC has about 40 yrs experience and she’s a pretty precise woman so I think her info is correct (even though it’s not the answer I wanted).

You should each have an adcom assigned to you – maybe you want to email them and ask them this question.

Or maybe it’s not their official policy but practically speaking, that’s what happens.

Sorry – there was another question in there – “are you willing to give up oxford for a chance at emory?”

That is the fifty million dollar question. Not sure. Guaranteed in at Oxford vs iffy chance at Emory. It will depend how much she likes the other school she was accepted at.

Very tough choice for me as well tech or Oxford but Emory aid is far superior check out financial aid packages. My Mom is kind of forcing me to oxford although emory is y dream school i wish I had a choice. That policy is so dumb

^I hope I’m wrong – I googled oxford emory waitlist and read through some old posts on this site. Sometimes the Emory WL moves end of April (before you’d have to deposit). I hope it does for your sake (and D’s).

FWIW – I’m her mom, and she doesn’t listen to what I tell her to do…
