The Pantyhose Debate!

I think of Mrs. Roper :joy:

I’m no expert but I guess tights can be footed or footless
and leggings are footless. But what do you call leggings that have straps?

stirrup pants - which I haven’t thought about since 1990 or so.

I rarely wear pants to work and almost always wear skirts or dresses. To me:
Leggings = footless and what I wear from Athleta with dresses or on their own casually. They are not opaque at all.

Tights: more opaque but less likely to run. I personally almost always wear footless tights though footed add more common. I seek out footless. I prefer them over footed.

Pantyhose: quite translucent. Mostly skin tone colors but can be an opaque color.

I just bought 10 pairs of knee high pantyhose. I use them on my washing machine drain hose in the utility sink so I don’t have to clean a lint trap. I just toss and replace with a new one periodically. (I use a thick rubber band to keep it attached to the hose.) :joy:

I think you are using the word opaque when you mean translucent…? If so, I agree with your definitions.

Yes, that would be right especially for pantyhose - good vocab call!!!

Ahhh… that’s why they’re called “pantyHOSE.”

Glad to hear the correction. Was having trouble visualizing non-opaque (transparent) leggings.

Right. My mom used to remind me that “stockings”/nyloons in her day required garter belt thingy.

Amen

Where I am, leggings are footless but are worn under other clothes. But can also be worn sort of like pants under a tunic length top.

Tights are thicker than stockings and can be with feet or footless. I have both.

Stockings tend toward the sheerer side. They have feet usually, although there are stockings made for wearing with open toe shoes.

Yes. If the pants are nicer than jeans, with which I wear socks in cold weather, then I’ll wear knee highs, usually black or navy and often the compression type. Some knee highs that don’t have compression ratings still provide some support, which I need.

I still have some knee high stockings, nude and black. Long ago I wore them to work under pants year round. But over time I migrated to more and more shoes where I could use socks. And flat sandals in summer. These days I just use them occasionally with slacks for church.

we were just talking about this at work. I have 4 weddings in the next 6 weeks. I usually wear something like my most recent go to one piece with legs. But I always look too covered up compared to others. I bought a couple new dresses that are just above the knee. However, my legs are so pale and veiny! Looks awful. Going to have to get something. Dresses are either black or mostly black cocktail style. Wearing black pumps. Trying to decide whether nude or black hose is better. Any thoughts?

I would say nude are better for hose. But have you tried self tanner? Or a spray tan? May give you the cover you need without wearing hose, only if you don’t want to wear hose.

Depending where you live or the weddings are…(Southern California? Minnesota?! ) I like the look of sheerer black hose with a shorter black dress if you have the legs to pull it off!

I like sheer black when I wear black because nude hose doesn’t match my pasty arms and draws too much attention. If you want to create more of an intentional “look,” you can get some with a floral pattern or other pattern (assuming it works with the dress). Target has some online.
