The Pantyhose Debate!

I use this when wearing skirts/dresses bare-legged (also at beach). Works great; stays put.

History sidebar: With nylon stockings scarce, women would paint their legs so it looked like stockings, 1940s - Rare Historical Photos.

I bet that leg makeup has come a long way since the 1940s! But no more need to draw a ‘seam line” down the back of the legs.

I agree that a nice sheer black hose (or even grey) can sometimes be a nice compromise.

I agree with everything you said, and I am moon-glow white skinned. But. The bronzing lotions are much, much better than spray tans and the like. If applied well, they really look natural. When I want to look professional (or cute for like the 4th of July) without tights, bronzers let my legs breathe without another layer.

I went through about a half dozen bronzers before I found a good one. I use Bondi Sands in light, apply daily 2 coats about a week before summer starts and then keep it up until it is tights season. I use the application mitt they sell separately. (In case anyone reading along is looking for a tights alternative in warm weather.)

Not really contributing, but confessing I still have one dresser drawer for pantyhose, tights, camisoles, and slips (also those sticky boob things too) — separate from my sock drawer!

Haha, me too! I just bought the sticky boob thing this summer.

I don’t look very good in pantyhose

If I’m wearing a dress, which is rare, I always wear tights. I have two pairs, one black, one neutral, which I have had for 20+ years - that tells you how often I wear them!

So, back from my first time to Paris. Sheer black hose worn quite a bit with the younger girls dresses and skirts.

Popped into Anthropology past weekend. They had sheer hose with rhinestones… this store caters to a younger crowd and stocks “in” stuff so looks like hose is not dead yet.

For my MOB outfit (below the knee dress), I wore Nordstrom’s Everyday Control Top Pantyhose ($15). I felt that they did the job intended, which was to hide imperfections but otherwise be inconspicuous.

I’ve made the decision I’m wearing hose with either dress I choose. One would be sheer black, the other nude. No one wants to see my white crepey legs. These are above the knee dresses. I’m going to stop in Anthropology! Thanks BunsenBurner.

We are going to a “formal” optional wedding. MOB, my friend, thinks there will probably be a lot of long gowns. My 2 choices are cocktail length.

One is a black with ivory and some rhinestone detail. I’m guessing since it’s slightly colorblock, mostly black, I can wear at a formal wedding, what do you think? If so, I found some black fishnet hose with teeny rhinestones placed throughout! How fun. I’d wear with black heel pumps. Would do you think of that look? Dress is about 3 inches above my knee.

Sounds very nice. And I think there will be lots of black for a formal wedding

I think black is okay. I’ve been to many weddings with plenty of women in black. I think we have to be able to put aside the “old” ideas of what to wear as the generations below us don’t follow the same “rules”.

I agree- I’ve been to 6 weddings this year and there were plenty of women in black dresses- of all ages- and they all looked fabulous. At one wedding the MOB and MOG wore long black with a bit of bling- they were beautiful and complimented the attendants emerald green dresses and black tuxes ( St, Patrick’s weekend wedding)

Went to the wedding last night. So many mature women (45 and older) including the bride’s Grandma had bare legs and those legs just looked hideous, seriously ugly. Veins, crepey, skin age spots. I swear ladies, wear your super sheer hose with cocktail. The unattractive legs actually detracted from the dress.

I was walking behind this one women who had an edgy fun outfit on. Dress, or skirt was below the knee with cool booties. No hose. Those veins on her calves just ruined the look. How much more edgy to have worn sheer black, plus more attractive. Ok, my 2 cents.

Thanks for the report!

Folks. If conmama approved of hose, that means hose is in! :sunglasses: :leg:

I was very happy to have long dresses for son’s wedding - no worry about pantyhose vs not. Ditto for daughter’s a few years back, in Oct… with a rather chilly outdoor ceremony.

If weather had not turned into snowstorm last night, I would have worn a light brown suit to church that my grandmother sewed for me around 1977. (It has wonderful hand stitching along all the seams - I had talked about it to an elderly member last week and wanted to show it to her.) Was leaning toward a pair of light black/brown pantyhose with black pumps because the bare leg look on my legs looks odd, except for when I wear casual summer dresses and skirts.
