I've been browsing the Rice U forums (because it is a U that I am VERY interested in) and I constantly see this upside about Rice/Baylor and guarenteed med school admissions or something. Would someone care to extrapolate this relationships? If it is what I think it is, then Rice certainly has a strong number of checks in its back pocket.

The guaranteed med school admission comes from the Rice-Baylor Medical Scholars program. You apply pretty early in the game and it’s very hard to get in. As long as you keep a certain GPA and take the required classes, entrance to BCM is guaranteed after your undergraduate stay at Rice.

Beyond that, plenty of students at rice are premeds. Rice has a great location. Literally across the street from one of the largest medical centers in the world, students have access to things like research, volunteer work, and other exposure that medical schools like to see. This probably helps premeds as Rice consistently sends 90%+ of its premeds to medical school.

At least that’s my understanding. Maybe a current student can explain the extent to which BCM helps non-Rice/Baylor premeds.

The new Collaboration Center will allow Rice students to work with scientists/people in the medical professions across the street at the Texas Medical Center (largest medical center in the world).

As far as BCM, things will get even more cozy if BCM becomes a part of Rice officially, but Rice pre-meds/science majors have little problem finding medical research to do with the opportunities over there.

I’m not premed, but given Rice’s academic reputation, very high acceptance rate to med school, and the fact that we have all those hospitals plus a collaboration center within walking distance, I’d say Rice is arguably the top place in the country for an UG looking to go to med school.
