The Real Story on On-campus publication

I'm coming to Yale in the fall, and am really passionate about getting involved in on-campus publications. I really love reading and writing both journalism and creative writing.
I've looked on the Yale website, and I'm pretty overwhelmed by the on-campus publications. They all seem so impressive.
So, for any current students involved...what's the real, behind-the-scenes story on these publications? What kinds of people run them? What's the time commitment like? What's the quality of work? Is it plausible to be involved in multiple?

Thanks for your input.

There will be an org fair the first few days of school – the orgs will roll out info and try to recruit – remember – they want great people as much as you want to work w/a great org. That’ll be your best time to chat with them. Sell yourself to the ones that interest you. Good luck.

Firstly, congratulations! We are super excited to have you here.

While I’m not plugged into the publications sphere myself, I am able to provide some general background. It is absolutely possible to be involved in multiple publications; in fact, I know students who have written for (in one capacity or another) more than half the on-campus publications over the course of 4 years. That being said, it’s more normal to be heavily involved with just one or two publications. (Most students find it difficult to be heavily involved in (i.e. 10+ hours weekly commitment) more than two or three organizations.)

It differs widely from publication to publication, but the YDN is at least notorious for being a huge time commitment at the executive board level. My friends definitely put in at least 20 hours a week there.

As for more detailed information, I second T26E4’s post: you’ll want to check out the extracurricular bazaar. It should be during the first week of class next year.
