The Stanford Daily

Hey, everyone! Hope you had a Great New Year's. I had about 15-20 friends over and it was a blast....here's a toast to the Class of 2005 (High School)! And another one to the Stanford Class of 2009...to new experiences and making new friends at Stanford, undoubtedly the best and coolest university in the nation :p

But the reason I'm posting was to inquire about how easy it is to get involved in the Stanford Daily. Yes, I am the prototypical newspaper junkie who has been Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper for 2 years, and even though I want to "branch out" and do many other things in college, I really want to be involved in The Daily. Does anyone have any tips on who to contact? Must you be a journalism major to write? Or to become an Editor? Wait, does Stanford even offer a journalism major? If not, what is the equivalent?
How popular is The Daily at Stanford? I heard everyone reads it. Is it well organized? How much time does an average writer spend working for the Daily? The average editor? Is it possible to be involved in multiple organizations such as The Daily, a research project, Mock Trial, etc.?

Sorry for the litany of questions...please answer any that you can. Thanks so much.

While I haven't been involved in The Daily personally, one of my friends is a writer for The Daily and is a freshman as well. He was involved in his high school newspaper, but said that he was disappointed how there isn't as much of a newspaper "community" in college as there is in high school. Basically, he is assigned one or two stories a week, given a list of sources to contact, and left on his own. He doesn't really know anyone else on the newspaper besides his editor, he said. He seems to enjoy it well enough, however, since he's continuing to do it. If you have any other specific questions I'll see if I can relay them to him.
