Many people on this board want to attend these prestigious schools. But sadly, I know I have said this on other posts, but many of these schools are more based on politics (who you know) instead of how much you know. These schools, regardless of how "qualified" an applicant is, reject thousands of people with perfect scores and stats. Are there any keys to getting into theses schools you ask? Actually, there aren't any. Acceptence to these schools is a lottery ticket. Not to sound mean or rude, but why do people on this site CONTINUALY ask for their chances to these schools. My older friends attends Yale. He's majoring in Biochem. He didn't have steller grades (3.7 UW) Wasn't a URM. He didn't even have much of a hook (got a 1340 on the SAT) How did he get in and why was the valdictorian, who have a 3.9 with a 1500+ SAT reject? He doesn't know, I don't know, NOONE KNOWS! So... in conclusion, why do people continuously ask for their chances to HYPS?

in order to sleep better at night

Bump It Up!

I think we should start getting annoyed when the same people keep asking, but I guess it wouldn't hurt for people to ask.. once, only once please!

One of the most boggling things to me is that HYP and virtually all top-tier schools don't always accept the 1600/4.0s. Why is that? Maybe their essays were boring and based too much on academics instead of what they are like socially, etc. I'm hoping that's it, otherwise I'm going to be scared *****less. If my essay doesn't pull it for me (with all my boring/average/sub-par EC's), then I'm definitely done..

Actually, there are. You just have to be very lucky. In fact, you even reference them in your post:
There are ways to almost ensure acceptance at any school (such as being legacy with a big donor family), but usually they are out of your control.

Well, if this is the case, get lower grades/SAT. Then you'll be accepted!

That's the plan...

Not to be mean or rude, but why do people keep coming into the "Chances" forum only to ask why everyone asks for chances? I mean, it's a pretty well-labeled forum. If you don't want to see chances posts, don't read the forum.

Agreed with tetrahedr0n. You post and view at your own discretion. Granted not all the people on CC can gauge perfectly, but people need immediate responses and sometimes need reassurance to apply there.

Oh, and getting in, all you have to do is....get an IMO medal, win Intel, and be a URM.

That's it!
