How is George Washington University seen in the professional field or even by the general public? I am 99% going there in fall and am very excited. I know it's a good school but does it have respect? I feel like when people see the name they think "oh she/he couldn't get into Georgetown" or "they must of bought their way in". I'm starting to regret not applying to Georgetown just for those reasons, which I guess is superficial of me. My area of study is political science and I most likely will be settling in the DC/Maryland, NYC, or LA area after I graduate. I also plan to apply to top law schools, is this school in their range of students they like to accept from? I know Yale and Stanford Law can get picky about the undergraduate institution.

Just curious if any of you have any insight on how this college is seen.

99% going there? Aren’t decisions final by now?

If people think you couldn’t get into Georgetown, or you bought your way into GW, are they right? Does it matter?

GW is good for poly sci. Can’t beat the location for internships and networking. Top law schools will admit from almost any good school (of which GW is one) provided you have the GPA, LSAT, and other qualifications they seek. GW itself has a pretty good law school.

One doesn’t pick one’s u/g by one’s intended law school. Having picked one’s u/g institution, one doesn’t have second thoughts before one even arrives on campus. This is a matter to consider after one has experienced and rejected the virtues of GWU.

Having said that, GWU has a national reputation and is generally well-respected across the academic fields. Any school has its weaknesses, of course. I’ve heard it said recently among academics that GWU’s reputation is in decline, but in the MD/DC region I don’t see much evidence of that. GWU students I’ve spoken to have a tendency to think more of their school than academics do, but that could be said of a host of expensive national schools.

It is not Yale or Stanford, by a long shot, but that won’t keep you out of an elite law school. Your GPA, LSAT, letters of rec, leadership experiences, internships, etc. will get you into Yale or Stanford, and little having to do with your alma mater. However, since you will be in DC, to miss the opportunity to intern in the federal government could be seen as a wasted opportunity, and you might not want to go four years without a summer or more with the feds. Fortunately, GWU makes that a rite of passage for its students.

p.s., all rising freshmen have the heebie-jeebies this summer. take a deep breath. enjoy your life.

I think it’s perfectly normal to have second thoughts and wonder if you made the right choice. GW does have a few weaknesses but the area of poli sci is not one of them. It is well respected in that field and you will get a good education. Go forward and don’t look back, good luck!
