I am submitting my Rice signature page online. On the Rice's supplement to the common app, it says that the only requirement for the image that you upload is that it is a 2-D, scannable image and is less than 500 kb. Does that mean that the size (i.e., dimensions, not size in terms of memory) of the image can be larger than the small box on Rice's signature page in which I would draw my image if I were to submit the signature page on paper?

You can try uploading the image and then use “print preview” to see how it turns out.

It turns out to be almost an entire page - certainly larger than the box on the paper signature form. My question is, is it alright that it is so large?

I would think they want it to be no larger than 2x2. Can’t you just shrink the image?

What you put in the box has to stay in the box, I think that’s the general idea… Hope this helps. Good luck!

ahh this would be a problem cause mine is the size of a 8x11 piece of paper…

oh and i dont think that would be a problem cause when i talked to a rice rep she said that “students were getting really creative with their supplements with the online submission” and that they were submitting photoshopped images and such so i dont think it matters that much

but you should call them if you really are concerned

So what exactly is the purpose of this? When you submit it online, you just dowload a random image with it? Enlighten me someone

Wow, I didn’t see it as a 2x2 max requirement at all - I just saw the 500 kb requirement. Oh, well, too late now!

Iwantcollegehelp, it’s supposed to be an image of something that appeals to you. DS is a runner, so he attached a photo of a big plate of lasagna with the caption, “Carbo loading the night before a race!” So he didn’t exactly put a great deal of thought into it, lol.

i did that too. My document was a full page, but I uploaded it anyway. When I checked the print preview, it looked fine, so I think that’s what they expect if you submit online.

Lol,can it just be a picture you find cute? What a weird thing to ask in a application…

As long as it’s not nasty or offensive, I don’t think it will effect your chances of admission at all. Have fun with it.

I called and the lady said that the image will be automatically resized to fit that box…so details won’t show if it’s a 8x11 pic with a ton of writing on it or such…

are we allowed to put lyrics?

My son scanned the solution to a random math problem written on scratch paper.
I think music lyrics are fine.

I am a Rice alum ('76). The “box” is a Rice tradition. My classmates spent hours trying to conjure its purpose. In those days, we had a physics prof who was the son of Hermann Rorschach, famed for the ink blot test. Rumor had it that our Dr. Rorschach was evaluating applicants for potential psychological disorders! The fact that our Dr. Rorschach was interested in physics and not psychology did nothing to quell the rumor.
Have fun with the box. I’ll bet that there is no one living that really knows its purpose!
