Since the introduction of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, many people around me have embraced these platforms and have made them an integral part of their lives. I have not. For college and life after, is it a good idea/necessary to have some form of social media (aside from CC here) in order to be better connected for the sake of jobs and maintaining friendships?
I couldn’t imagine being in college in 2018 without Facebook. Almost all student organizations communicate essential information via Facebook group, and message classmates via Messenger, especially since asking for a phone number can be awkward. Email is still used to some degree, but FB is way more common.
^People rarely even ask for phone numbers anymore (which is unfortunate imo). They ask for Facebook, snapchat etc. And plenty of good info will be posted in a freshmen fb group.
Facebook is widely used for event invites. I got a facebook just so I can use it to manage events. Also, you’ll have tons of GroupMe’s for clubs, group projects, friend groups, etc.
Some form of social media is essential. In my first ever CS class I took, GroupMe was instantly brought up as the way to communicate in order to discuss our group project. I had never heard of GroupMe, so I had to sign up immediately, haha. In other classes where I had to do group projects, I had tried texting with my group, but I was the only member that had an Android phone. This meant that my phone didn’t play as nicely with group texts/messaging as the Apple people. Again, GroupMe was used just so I could better participate in the group discussion. I’m not a very social person or am I the type to take a bunch of selfies, so I never believed in having a Snapchat, Instagram, etc. If you need to have one, maybe Twitter is a good option. With how “viral” things go these days, who knows what connections can be made?
Actually was in a similar situation as you. I didn’t get my first facebook account until just before college. I would recommend getting a facebook account since a lot of student orgs use it.
