I often see posters on CC talk about SAT II scores helping to compensate for a GPA, to what level is this actually true? And if it is, does the same apply for AP?

Thanks

AP scores are not required by any college for admission, thus they will likely not affect admission. SAT subject tests improtance in admission seems to vary from college to college / major to major. Perhaps a little more important with science/ math majors? MY D had relatively low scores and was still admitted at Cornell (Human Development major)

Yeah just to expand on what csdad said, it depends on the applicant. He is right by saying if you want to do some kind of science major your scores matter more. But trying to get the best scores possibly should be your goal

A few do.

…the chart refers to SAT Subject Tests not AP exams…or am I missing something??

No, you’re not. It was me that was missing something. Ooops.

Unfortunately I have AP and Subject Test in all the non-math/science areas, those are my fortes. I have a 4.0 weighted and 3.8 unweighted which is ok, but relatively average for my reaches. I was hoping the scores would help me stand out
Euro/World: 5/740
US: 5/800
Language/Literature: 5/740

I took 4 APs and 3 SAT2s, and none of which were a math or science. Unless you’re looking into engineering or something, it’s by no means necessary.

I’m aware it’s not necessary I’m just curious as to what extent they can help make an applicant stand out.

I mean if you submit two great subject test scores, it’s only going to improve your application. It can demonstrate/validate your knowledge of a subject that matters to you. Makes you mulch-dimensional as well. That being said, they’re surely secondary to almost every other part of your application.

I think they are more meaningful when you submit subject scores in from a subject that you haven’t already proven your ability in.
