"The SAT is such BS"

According to kids with 90+ averages and SAT scores under 1000, the SAT is, in a word, BS. You know what I think? I think those kids just kiss teacher butt and can't think their way out of a paper bag. But opinions are like esophagi....everyone's got one. So what do you think? Both are BS, but which is more BS--GPA or SAT?

Actually, both SAT scores and GPA is ********. Einstein had a poor GPA and dropped out and probably wouldn’t have gotten extremely high in SAT’s. But he was a genius.

I don’t think intelligence can be measured with tests. It’s how successful you are. Presidents of companies…some are high school dropouts, are they dumb? No. But some are also MBA graduates from Ivy league schools.

So I believe every test is BS and it depends on how successful you are in live.

I believe the man with the highest IQ lives a humble life somewhere. I read an article on it like 6 years ago.

Some people just can’t take tests.

And this is coming from a person who CAN take tests, so I’m not just saying that to make myself feel better.

I know several people that are VERY intelligent but can’t do SATs.

It also goes the opposite way- sometimes people who do really really well are still idiots. It’s just learning how to take the test- some smart people can’t do it, some idiots can do it…

If you’re “a bad test-taker” then you wouldn’t have a terribly high GPA, unless every class you’ve taken has had no tests. =/

^That’s actually not true…it depends on the weight tests carry in the class.

I don’t think the SAT (hey, let’s wake a bunch of teenagers up super early on a Saturday morning and make them take a 4-hour test…***?) or GPA (where you’re basically screwed if you get one bad grade) are an accurate measure of intelligence.

Intelligence is a very subjective thing…an intelligent person in Africa is different from an intelligent person in the US, and so on and so forth.

I don’t know about your school, but in my school there isn’t a single class where you can get a 90+ average if you’re bad at taking tests.

Except, like, Art. And Gym.

“I believe the man with the highest IQ lives a humble life somewhere. I read an article on it like 6 years ago.”

Just what I’m saying. IQ doesn’t mean anything. He’s just good at taking IQ tests.

…
No, I think it’s more like he’s intelligent enough to know that fame and wealth aren’t everything. Or maybe he’s just sick and tired of interacting with regular people.
Have you ever taken a real IQ test? You can’t just use test taking skills to get a 220+ score unless you’re uber smart already (though maybe not 220+)… there’s no way a regular person would manipulate their way to that kind of score

Am I one of the few people on here that think that the SAT is actually a pretty good estimate of intelligence? I mean, my SAT is around 1900-2000 as a junior and I think that is pretty indicative of my intelligence on a scale. I don’t know too many people with high SAT scores, but most are just extremely intelligent. I have the highest SAT score in my school right now (I know, pathetic, eh?) and I am the valedictorian of my class; I just go to a poor, inner city school with blacks and Hispanics, so you know how it is. I have had a couple of teachers with very high SAT scores and were all extremely intelligent, although a friend of mine, who is an English teacher, had about a 1100/1600 SAT and is extremely well-read and intelligent. Based solely upon the SAT only, my opinion is that anywhere from 1100-1600 are just about on the same level of intelligence, disregarding other factors. My opinions are sort of odd, though. ;-)

This is exactly why GPA is bad…it’s very different depending on schools.

My sophomore year in geometry, I got HORRIBLE test scores…my worst was an 8/40. However I got a 95 first semester and an 89 second semester, because he weighted homework and classwork VERY heavily…moreso than tests.

My English classes haven’t ever put much weight on tests either.

^^

My upper-level English classes don’t give “tests”. We just write papers. Is it common for upper-level English classes to give multiple choice tests, as is what some CCer’s say they have?

I dunno, but my classes have never really given tests either, except for stupid district finals. UGH.

I’m agreeing with the majority here…

Although, in my case I think the ACT is BS. I got a 33, but I know very smart people who barely got a 25. Intelligence IS so subjective. Really, a test can’t measure that.

I’ve always recieved the same grades in English as I have in math… But when it comes to the SAT, there’s a good 120 point difference between the two sections. I definately did not score anywhere close to 1000, and I’m not complaining, but there’s a major distinction between my math and english test taking skills.

I don’t know about getting a 90+ average and scoring below a 1000 though… Are they just in easy classes?

Of course a standarized test can’t completely capture someone’s intelligence. But if someone has trouble taking these kinds of test (translating knowledge into answers), then colleges should be worried. I mean, these people are expected to take similar tests when they go to college…so if they can’t perform on the SAT or ACT, then how will they survive in college?

Main point: If you’re apply these tests to college, then they are absolutely relevant (to an extent). If you’re just commenting on its ability to rate someone’s intelligence, of course it’s flawed.

Having an A+ average in Calc BC as a sophomore isn’t going to ensure an 800 on the SATs. Standardized tests measure your ability to approach and solve problems.

Of course, their opinion, (or ours for that matter), about the SATs doesn’t matter, seeing as colleges use these as a reference for applications anyway.

this one kid who goes to my school is in all honors, 2 APs, had a 95 GPA and TRUST me his classes do NOT inflate grades, they are so hard!!! he is just crazy and never sleeps and always works. anyways he made a 23 ACT first time and 1610 ACT–new scale–ya he’s a complete idiot at test taking. hes in honors precal and is VERY good at it and still made something like 550 on SAT math. doesn’t make much sense?

Completely agreed with OP

I think the the conclusion we should draw from all this is that GPA and standardized tests should be dropped in favor of the admissions essays.
