The SAT word game

syzygy = 3 planets in a line

I stayed up all night and listened to my girlfriend blab on about the syzygy in the sky... >_>"

bacchanal

bacchanal = drunken parties?

I was appalled by protege's idea at studying SAT during a bacchanal :D

staunch

counter-strike = a game you can make your living off of

"r3n has won over $50 000 in cash prize in 2 years and he is only 16!"

console

You're supposed to solve the last person's vocab word.. you don't post the meaning of your own vocab word! Not to mention this is supposed to be SAT vocab... The words have to be somewhat obscure and brainy. "Console" seems a little too basic...

staunch = vociferously in favor of; ardently supportive of something

Staunch conservatives will often brand anyone on the political left as being a "whimp" or a "traitor."

pulchritude

pulchritude - beauty

Pulchritude matters very much in beauty pageants.

Derelict

Uh....which form of derelict? Noun, verb, or adj.

My favorite is the noun version.

derelict - bum, misfit

Cacjr was considered a derelict by the CC community for using the most absurd connotation of derelict.

Hackneyed

derelict (adjective) = run-down, rickety

The row of derelict tenements that lined the city's downtown was an eyesore to all pedestrians.

hackneyed: trite, rehashed

Catchy, hackneyed phrases like "Make the world a better place" do not capture the true spirit of philanthropy.

ecumenical

ten characters

CC24, it's OK to respond to the same word someone else does. Part of the fun of the game is racing to beat the other people :) I saw you answered it first but then modified your post...

This is a great idea, I don't know what that word means though. I need to study.

ecumenical - world-wide...relating to the church...right?

The Pope put forth to leaders of the world an ecumenical plea, asking them to help resolve the conflict between the US Military and Iraqi insurgents.

You got it, cacjr. But you forgot to leave a new word!

Godfather, it's OK if you don't know a word. You can look it up in the dictionary and still play; you don't have to know the words off the top of your head. Part of the goal of the game is to learn new words.

sex - to have sexual intercourse

let's sex

orgasam

orgasm - what r3n will never experience

new word: debacle

debacle: a fiasco; a messed up affair

The Enron debacle led to a huge political fallout for Bush and the Republicans, who were accused of close ties to corrupt energy officials.

solipsism

I'm stumped. I had to look at the dictionary -- a theory holding that the self can know nothing but its own modifications and that the self is the only existent thing.

Screw the sentence.

Supercilious

You're right on solipsism. Basically it's the belief that the only thing that can be known with certainty is one's own existence.

Since you couldn't put it into sentence, I'll do one for you. Let that be a new rule for the game... to promote learning:

[Guy speaking to his girlfriend]
"Hey baby, I read this thing on solipsism. It says the only verifiable truth is yourself and everything and everybody else might not exist."

"I can't believe you're telling me this garbage."

"See, you believe in it, too!"

supercilious - patronizing; haughty or condescending arrogance

when the young Steve Jobs approached IBM with the idea for the personal computer, IBM executives merely regarded him with supercilious glances and told him to go back to school. 10 years later Jobs would be laughing at them.

sententious

I don't know like....any of these words. sigh

arctic_monkey, don't sigh. The purpose of the game is not to show off knowledge, but to practice vocab and to help others practice their vocab. Feel free to look words up in the dictionary and then post their meaning (put it into your own words though, to help your memorization)
