Is it true that most schools are still using a 1600 point scale which doesn't include the writing section for admission purposes? I got a 740 on my writing, easily my highest score, so I'm not too thrilled if this is true.

I would think that most schools that use 1600 pt scale count the writing section as an SAT II.

Why did the college board even make the change then?

cause they are retarded

Any schools that use a 2400 point scale that aren't reaches for someone with a 2030, 94.0 GPA weighted, above average EC activities, and pretty good AP scores?

because the UCs threatened to drop it out of their requirements unless a writing component was added. and the UCs are the CB's cash cow, so they needed to appease to them.

Even at schools that will look at the writing score this year, almost none will weigh writing equally with math and cr.

Has anyone gotten a strong writing score? Because I made a 12/12 writing on the ACT (35 Eng/Writing score), a 5 on the AP English Language test, but a 630 on the SAT writing (760 verbal). English is my bent; I don't understand my score. Maybe it was a bad day, or something. I'm fully willing to accept responsibility for my score. I was just suprised.

I do think CB was smart to add the writing, since almost everyone who takes the SAT also wants to take the writing. Almost all colleges required it. So it was a good move, I think.

I got a 5 on my AP Eng lang test and a 740 on the SAT writing. I bet you can increase your score pretty substantially if you'll review some of the more anal grammatical concepts the SAT tests, and make your essay more of the Jane Scahffer formulaic style the CB likes.

yea the school i'm interested in, SMU, is going on the 1600 scale which sucks b/c writing was my highest!

You're going to SMU? I would hate going there, its right in the middle of Highland Park. That would be like never leaving home for me.

ha...well its pratically home for me, i only live 20 minutes away! but i do love that area

EuropeGirl, do you know if it was it the essay or the multiple choice that lowered your score? I'm curious because I've heard about some studies proving that essay score mainly correlated with the length of the essay... I dunno if this is true, just what I heard.

And to the OP, I know that the guy at the Williams info session said they weren't going to look too seriously at the writing score this year. That's only at one school, though.

tunetherainbow, my essay dunked the score. Yeah, I had received an email from one of my friends linking me to a site covering that survey, so I made sure that I wrote a longer essay.

I do think mine was a bit on the creative side. First of all, it wasn't 5 paragraphs, it was 4 (one of my body paragraphs was long). I don't think it had a title. . . . but I can't recall. Did have a thesis, an intro (with a hook), and a solid conclusion. For the history question, I discussed "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas and "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water" by Michael Dorris. I WANTED to get into history, but I ran out of time. I think my weak spot was that I didn't use enough variety--I should have discussed history and literature, not literature and literature.

The essay in March wasn't too bad.
The prompt asked if creativity was necessary in the modern world.
So I interpreted as creativity = art versus practicality = science. Are they ncessary? Definately!
I started off with a personal example of my sister as an example of an indeal blend of creativity versus practicaility. She's a stellar person with academic and extracuricular strengths.
Then I used Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead to show that Howard Roark is another example of art versus science, structural mathematics versus the overall artistic presentation of his buildings.
I topped off my arguements with the Great Drepression. FDR authorized and paid photographers to document the time in pics a la Migrant Mother. Thus, creativity allowed artists to preserve history for future generations-a most practical idea.
Finish off the essay with a concluding paragraph (4 in total). I hit the last line of my essay space as the proctor called time.

Good score on the essay actually boosted my writing score. Even tho I got a relatively low multiple choice score (bad grammar!), the essay boosted my overall to 750.
