Yup, found it-- "U. of C. jumps to 9th place in ranking of universities: New look at numbers boosts its standing," published in the Tribune on August 18, 2006.

Though it indicates that many of U of C's numbers are loosely configured, to say the least, Dean of Enrollment Michael Behnke makes a point that other schools are very likely fudging their data as well. For example, I was formally rejected by two schools I never finished applications for, thus allowing those colleges to appear more selective than they actually are.

I remember this article, amykins. There may well have been an article in the Maroon as well.
I have changed my opinion about what the U of C has been up to of late. I have a graduate degree from Chicago, studied in a PhD program, and work at the University. I used to believe in the rough pride of the excellence of the University of Chicago and looked down upon attempts to "market" the University.
I now "get" the "Life of the Mind" campaign, meeting with the USN&WR people, adopting the Common Application, and selecting social and attractive students to lead campus tours (this last from work-study students I work with).
Why stay a hidden treasure?

cameliasinensis, that isn't the problem here.
It is that he felt the need to talk about how Duke's yield is going to be "mad low" after choosing another college over Duke.. he's not only saying that college is a better fit for him. He is also saying, "Haha! I'm turning down Duke! Later suckers!"

Chicago's sudden rise in ranking turned me off when i heard they "consulted" the US News and World Report people. Whatever it is they did, i just don't see that as being cool :/

i disagree with NUGrad. Chicago is hardly overrated. its reputation is indisputably deserved academically. but the reason why you would think this is because every Northwestern v. Chicago thread ends up in an argument between students of the two school defending each other in the form of self-praise or bashing.

The schools are equally prestigious but very different in atmosphere. i do think Northwestern is often not given enough credit for its academics (it definitely gets much credit for its social atmosphere and student body), but that doesn't necessarily equate to Chicago being overrated.

I'm not sure if it's so much bashing the LACs as it has to do with ignoring them entirely, or looking down on them. Many here don't actively bash LACs, but rather they have very narrow-minded views of them and more often than not, look upon them with a mixture of condescension and stereotyping.

LACs aren't bashed - they are just considered by a different demographic than what usually comes to CC in my opinion. They are smaller schools, so its not suprising that theres a smaller number of people who choose to apply.

Schools that do get "bashed" actively are WashU, Chicago, Northwestern, and Duke - WashU for playing the US News game, Chicago for consulting with US News and for being nerdy, Northwestern for being 'too jocky', Duke for being Southern/having false charges levied against its lacrosse team.

I guess the Ivy leaguers try to squash competition outside of the Northeast....juuust kidding

As a future Northwestern student (class of 2011) and long time Chicago native, it appears NU and UC bash each other on this board, when in reality they are both amazing places to go to school and highly regarded both inside and outside Chicago.

I would say Duke gets its share of bashing, particularly from ivies and ivy-calibers, because it has great academics and athletics. Surprisingly, Stanford doesn't get this for some reason...

WashU deserves it bashing.
Penn and Cornell get a lot of bashing because they've historically been the reject/safety Ivies (atlhough Penn clearly has gotten much harder to get into)

Brown gets bashed a lot. so many CCers see it as the "worst" ivy and the one with the "dumbest" kids. i really don't know why so many people disrespect brown. its so hard to get into and everyone i know loves it there. there are many great academic departments, etc.
btw, i HATE it when CCers "Rank the Ivies".

1) They couldn't/didn't get in
2) They're at another top school working their ***es off and think Brown kids don't work hard
3) They're unhappy at their current school and thus take their anger out on arguably the happiest school.

haha yeah everyone thinks brown kids just smoke pot and have sex all day. i think it may be because of pass/fail, but i highly doubt anyone really uses that system extensively.
