Here’s how we play: The only goal is to name one thing that you love about Smith or that makes it unique: (you’re only allowed one comment at a time). This will serve to help current Smithies appreciate what they already have, and encourage future Smithies and prospies. Remember, if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all! I’ll start:

My D (not a math major, but a student who has taken numerous math courses including in her final semester) recently mentioned how much she appreciates the math forum on the 3rd floor of the Math Dept. building. She says it is open 24 hours/day and the profs, whose offices apparently ring the lounge area, typically keep their doors open. Students can wander in on a casual basis and get help with a proof if needed. D got in the habit of regularly doing her math HW/studying right in the math lounge for the supportive atmosphere and access to math minds.

D has said that she's cutting back for her senior year. All the rehearsals piling up at the end of the year--dance programs, orchestra, wind ensemble--put too much pressure on studying for finals, papers, etc., while maintaining something remotely resembling a sleep schedule. (Had back to back all-nighters last week.)

I've been especially impressed with the athletic support my D has received, in particular the attention to sports-related health issues, as well as the little extras like the banquet to honor athletes who maintain high academic performance. Also, the college's receptiveness (at least this has been true in her case) to student-initiated campaigns on behalf of social/environmental causes, enabling students to discover their voices as activists for social change.

"15. You gain enough comfidence to slip yourself in a single men's bathroom in the public because the women's bathroom was taken."

I saw a Bryn Mawr student do this at the local Starbucks. The door to the women's bathroom was locked, so, without a second of hesitation, she opened the door to the men's room and went in. It completely cracked me up. I wouldn't do that unless I was TRULY desperate, and, believe me, there would still be some hesitation. :-)
