Memoirs of a Geisha

Middlesex. Ah, it was so good.

i have another camus book, however, the borders near here doesnt have the stranger. i really want to read it though.

can't you buy it off amazon or something?

I am very happy to see this thread because The Stranger is my very favorite book I read in high school and not many talk about it. Good taste!

We just finished reading it a couple weeks ago. Stranger is good.

However, my favorite book is Fountainhead.

I love that book too, it got me interested in existentialist philosphy.

i have the best taste in books. haha. =p

Fountainhead is my english teacher's favorite book

has anyone ever read Ulysses? by James Joyce

Ulysses is one of my summer homework books for Lit :P the unabridged version.. fun

Has anyone read Tuesdays with Morrie? That's a good book also.

I love Ulysses but I hate the Stranger.

What can I say...simplistic use of language in a work of literary merit disgusts me.

I have some trouble reading Joyce, but I do enjoy Camus (The Plague was excellent, The Stranger was solid, but The Fall wasn't too hot). Camus's refined language is part of his style - why does this disgust you?

what can i say....

i just don't enjoy reading "literary" books with simple sentence structure :-/

why?

simply because someone other than Camus could have written his books, meaning he wasn't that special...but on the other hand, NOBODY could have written Faulkner, Woolf, Joyce, etc. So basically, I don't see what's so great about The Stranger. The themes are spectacular, but everything else is blah.

you can imagine what I think about Hemingway....

edit: yes, i know the style fits the theme, but still. i don't like it.

I really like Camus's understated style- even though it is, of course, in translation. For anyone who enjoyed the Stranger, I'd recommend reading The Myth of Sisyphus

But as much as I like Meursault, I have to say that Raskolnikov is the best murderer in world literature :)

I read the myth of sisyphus (in french though) ! I really enjoyed it and should probably read the stranger.
I read Tuesdays with Morrie. It was thought-provoking in the simplist of ways.

I really liked The Myth of Sisyphus, as well, though I thought The Stranger was also pretty good.

The Myth of Sisyphus is a good read and makes for interesting discussion.

Ugh, I didn't like it at all. The tone is too gloomy, the setting is too somber, everything..everything..is just too depressing. And the theme itself can be better found in philosophy texts or in some research about Camus' views.

how can you not like the stranger because it's "simple writing"

that's just ignorant

I just don't think very highly of a work which I was able to understand as early as fourth grade. Sorry.
