The struggle is real (sports edition)

SooooI went into my Volleyball Season really excited, made JV (I'm a sophomore) and it was an okay season until the competition got real.

Struggle #1
The Varsity Coach pulled up this sophomore girl to practice with varsity, which would have been exciting if she wasn't mediocre and have two rich, lawyer parents. All of JV lost respect for the coach who had obviously been bribed.

Struggle #2
Throughout the season he brought three other girls up who had gone to 'travel' volleyball the year before (it's thousands of dollars, like 10 hours a week, and it takes about 30 minutes driving time to get there)

Do I have thousands of dollars: NO
Do I have someone to drive me 30 minutes in each direction five times a week at 5:00 ish? : NO
IF I had someone to drive me, do I have the gas money? : NO
I am in honors and 1 AP class, can I take 3 hours out of every day including the weekend for this?! : NO

So in conclusion, if you don't make these sacrifices you don't make the team.

Struggle #3
THEN, he announced that he is only keeping 10 players on varsity next year, not 11.
AND, that 5 of the spots are taken, (there is a senior policy, so you can't cut any seniors that have been in the program the three years before)
ANDDDDDDDD there are 1-3 girls TRANSFERRING from a local catholic school JUST FOR THE VOLLEYBALL, and it's NOT because our team is good, it's because their team is sooooo good they get cut even though they are amazing. SO that's 60-80% of the spots taken.
ANDDDDDDDDDDDD about 1/2 of my JV team is doing the travel stuff ^^^ AND he has never put a person on Varisty that hasn't done travel.
This makes me mad, because I was a starter for JV, but Varisty is a lost cause. sigh

What are your sport struggles?

@Spiral7‌ Tell your principal that he was bribed. Lol

Tried out for the Tennis Team last year, didn’t get in. We only have a Varsity team, not a JV. Coach told me if we did have one though, I would probably get in, but our Varsity team is insanely good, so I understood…

Yikes. That’s rough. My coaches just play favorites when determining who goes where. One of the coaches bumped me down from basically what was a varsity team to a second varsity team before states. The reason? I was too thin. Not to mention, the head coach has no backbone and lets the assistant coaches push him over. The girls on my team are catty and rude. We would never admit it, but we all hate one another. That’s my struggle. Crossing my fingers for a smooth season for all of us student athletes.

You know what else is real?

The NaCl

I made my school’s varsity bowling team freshman year, but sophomore year the head coach split and made a JV team and I got bumped down. I’d like to say this was because I was younger than the rest of the team so thus less experienced, but of the five juniors on the team two’d never bowled on a league before, plus a freshman (who, okay, II admit, is a stronger bowler than I am) made varsity. Thankfully, the people on varsity had plenty of schedule conflicts so I got to play up enough to qualify as varsity level.

And now, junior year, I’m not likely to make varsity AGAIN, but this time it’s because I messed up my ankle. Fun times.

@ThatPurpleKoala‌ omg your school has a bowling team??? that’s so cool

the struggle of sports is when you get home at 6:30pm, have to shower and eat, and start homework at 7:30pm when you’re all sore and tired and not in the mood to do homework…

the season sure was fun but sometimes i missed getting home at 3pm and actually sleeping 8 hours a day

Would love to be on the high school bowling team!

@cso1640‌ @CheddarcheeseMN‌

Yeah, and it’s by far the easiest sport to join because it’s a winter sport and the only sports anyone cares about during that season are basketball and swimming :stuck_out_tongue: we’re terrible for the most part, but it’s a lot of fun. What sport(s) do you play?

My struggles lol:

Hockey nights - Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Practices 7:15-9:15 weekdays, games varying on weekends.

No excuses in hockey, so if you’re late to practice it means 30 mins of non-stop skating along with push-ups.

Games are often in Long Island (1.5 hrs away from me) and since I’m a goalie I only play half the games! Therefore, I sometimes drive 1.5 hrs or more to sit on the bench! I think that qualifies as #thestruggle

Also, I play for 2 teams, a AAA 18U travel team and my school’s Varsity team. Only problem is, I’m the only goalie on my Varsity team! That means no breaks, no relief if I have a bad game, etc.

Rant complete. Thank you @Spiral7‌ for making this thread ahah

freshman in cross country, started out running JV then got bumped up to varsity… Then my shins got messed up, so I got bumped down right before region :frowning: . What really sucked was being in pain everyday for the ENTIRE season (shin splints) and getting home at 5:00 tired and frustrated and having to do 6 hours of homework (AP BIO… Nuf said). Anyways, now that the season’s over I miss running so much (have to take a break to heal) and I miss all the girls on my team. Well, there’s always track in the spring!

Got a concussion during Spring Football. My mom freaked out (she’s foreign) and she forbid me from playing the next year. Which sucks because I had been Varsity soccer since freshman year and in football, they moved me from DE on Varsity (with a crappy position coach) to LB. Throughout Spring Practice I had been rolling with the Varsity squad. Now I play neither :frowning: Hate this ****. But at least I have time to do homework this year

I’m still bitter about this even though my golf season ended over a month ago…

One of my teammates was practicing sand shots around the green and was aiming right at me (not sure if on purpose or not). She was so close to hitting the ball before another one of my teammates said, “What are you doing? Trying to take out our number one player?” And this teammate that’s practicing is like (in a really sassy tone) , “Umm, actually I’m number one”. And I’m just thinking, please, so you beat me by 5 strokes at our last tournament, but my 9-hole average (tracked by our coach) is still two strokes lower than yours. Ha.

And the fact that I worked so hard over the spring, summer, and fall to get to the number one spot which I held throughout the regular season, but just crumbled in post-season play because of APs and stress so I finished the season at the number two spot.

Feels good to rant this off.
