The student population...

I have heard from a lot of people a bad rep for GW students. Basically I've gotten the impression there are a lot of really stuck up kids that have endless supplies of money...

This is upsetting to me because I really liked GW when I visited a few summers ago and am seriously considering attending if admitted. Does anyone else have insight on the student body? current students?

Totally not my experience when I visited last fall. Most were helpful and very friendly. I hung out on foggy bottom and just struck up conversations with people. Didn't have a single negative response or observation. Not sure where this is coming from, in fact I hadn't even heard it until coming to this board. You could probably say the same thing about any of the pricey private colleges...if you look for rich stuck up kids, you can find them anywhere.

A girl who graduated from my high school last year is now at GW. She invited me for a weekend and I got to mix with a lot of different groups of people. I did run into some girls that were obviously well off bc they were dressed in the very best just for lounging around the dorm, but if I hadn't know the names of designers, you would never had known by the way they acted. They had the same concerns as me when it came to appearance and guys, etc. and they were really nice. I did meet a girl that was way too into herself for me, but I probably wouldn't bother with someone like that anyway, so they do exist, but I won't be their friend. Now I might not be their friend bc they will choose it, but I found that there were so many people that were great that I don't think I'll miss her. But isn't that the way it is no matter where you go? I had a great weekend and I'll be crushed if I don't get in now. Give it a chance, I think you'll find your niche and be really happy there!

GW may be known, unfairly, as the "school for smart, rich kids"
However, like in any schoo, you find people from every walk of life. Therefore, although you do find very rich people, these are not necessarily stuck up. It is up to you to find who you feel comfortable with.

When I first got to GW, I thought that the school was a bunch of stuck-up rich kids, because they tend to be very visible (dressing up and going out to fancy restaurants and exclusive clubs). However, when I joined some student groups and ventured outside of my floor to meet new people, I found that there are tons of people not like that at all. Do a lot/most of the students come from families with a lot of money? Yes. Does that make them all stuck-up? Definitely, definitely not. And unless you only hang out with the freshman that want to go expensive places all the time, you won't be left out of doing fun things...even most of the rich kids are given limited budgets by their parents :)

Agree with GW senior. Rich does not equate to stuck up.

GW has 10,000 students, some of which are stuck up and rich. Some are one but not the other, most are neither. My S attended, and loved it. One of his friends had more money than most; one of them was on 100% need-based grant; the rest were pretty much middle of the road, with multiple backgrounds.

With 10,000 kids, you will find your own friends.

I think you do have some wealthy, snobby kids, but it is quite diversified with people who are attracted to DC, politics, on financial aid and attracted to the wonderful internships and programs that GW has to offer.
