Does anybody else think that they are pointless and annoying?? Most likely the people on this forum are not an admission counselor for your desired school, so them telling you that you are definitely able to get in doesn't help you at all. Not every person with perfect stats is able to get into the school that they want to, so posting them on here so people could tell you how perfect they are and boost your ego WILL NOT get you admitted! I could understand people who have grades that aren't so picture perfect asking these questions, but if you have a 4.0 GPA, participate in all of these extra-curriculars, and then some have a little more confidence in yourself and stop looking for validation from random people on the internet.
I'm not trying to bash anybody, and I know these threads are not gonna stop anytime soon anyway, I just wanted to see if other people feel the same. Post your thought :)

I agree with you. At some point I find these threads to just be pompous…I know some people are honest in chancing threads and are really looking for some advice, however a majority are just, CHANCE ME FOR HYPMS PLEASE, I HAVE A 4.0 GPA AND 2400 SAT, CAN I GET IN? Like…really? Of course you’re qualified and deep down inside some people know that and just want to show off.
Also, why is chancing needed? If you really want to go a school, don’t let some anonymous online tell you that you can or cannot…if you’re convinced that you have no chances, you’ll never try and you’ll never know if you’ll get in.

Word up. But I can see why superapplicants would make threads anyway, it’s kind of reassuring to see someone (even a completely uninformed someone) totally assure you of your acceptance.

This is an example of what I hate the most:

“You have an excellent chance of getting into X university. Your stats are top notch, and your ECs show passion that adcoms will like. X university really places a lot of weight on recs and essays, so make sure yours are stellar. Chance me back for X university? (link)”

And yeah, I find it supremely annoying when someone with perfect stats and great ECs ask for their chances. It’s so obvious that they’re trying to boost their egos.

The chance me’s are mostly 2200+ higher grades who are asking if they can get into a easy-to-get into school. It makes other feel low of themselves. Truth is if you have a 2400 and 4.0 GPA you may not get in because in a way your just showing off. Colleges don’t want just “2400 and 4.0” kids, they want low and medium kids more.

@Purple I know college admissions are usually looking at an application holistically, and having perfect grades/scores doesn’t mean you’re getting in. However, it does mean that you are qualified and there’s no real need to ask if you can get into an ivy because it is, at some point, more or less unpredictable.

And yes, it does make average kids feel lowly of themselves, but I don’t let them get to me; they’ll get a reality check sooner or later.

bump :)

agreed.

It would be a public service if at the very end of this kind of chance-me thread, after all the back and forth, after all the apps are in, the applicant would kindly post their acceptance/waitlist/denial result to said institution so not only would we all have closure, but it would illustrate to the hopeful masses that although some percentage of stellar applicants to X university do indeed get in, you can have all the right stuff yet still be denied. “Top stats” only means that you are a probably a contender, not that you’re a shoe-in.

I completely agree. I’ve never done a chance thread because I know my stats are on par with everyone else applying to those schools so I’ll either get accepted like the minority or rejected like the majority of applicants. So chance threads would just end up like
A) They’ll say I wont get in and add unecessary stress
OR
B) They’ll give me false hope

By the way, I made a thread like this a few months ago and was actually politer in phrasing it (not that the OP was at all rude, but some people take offense easily, so I made mine somehow even more sweet-toned). Unfortunately I did not get the logical responses given here. I think I may have posted it on the “Chance Me” board, which may explain why 5 million people were jumping on me and defending chance threads to their last breath. Oops, my b.

I think the “What are my chances” forum is so popular because applicants are basically just CURIOUS about how others perceive their competitiveness at a particular school. I agree with MoreAboutNothing, there is a “reassurance” factor involved during a very stressful time in the life of a college applicant.

A couple of my favorite original poster comments:

“SAT I: 1850 but I’m retaking and shooting for a 2200”

“I attend a top-ranked, highly competitive high school”

Keep those chance threads coming, if it helps some of you relieve the stress and satisfy your curiosity!

They are similar to reality tv - entertaining.

THIS. Lol. Sometimes I just visit over there and read the long ones with convoluted discussions between the posters for fun times.

Wow. That makes me sound like I have no life. But it is certainly a good time-filler for procrastination.

Thanks for all your comments. I knew I couldn’t of been alone in this.
@Vot123 It would be interesting to see if the applicants with totally amazing stats actually got into their desired schools at the end it all. That would definitely add some substance to these usually pointless threads.
@born2dance94 I agree with you and I have never done and never will do a chance me thread. Lol at you expressing opposition to the chance threads on the chance me board. I avoided doing it there so I wouldn’t severely get attacked.

The worst thing about chances threads in this College Admissions forum is that such threads actually belong in the What Are My Chances? forum. This forum is more for threads about general issues in college admission that fit multiple applicants, not individual prediction questions. My general statement about chances of any applicant is that the only way an applicant can really know chances is to apply.

lol @jshain
