The Third Notorious Essay Question: Personal or Not?

Hi everyone!

I’m applying EA to UChicago. For the extended essay option, should it be personal or not? Should we base it off of personal experiences, or should we provide our own commentary on something and make it more of an analytical essay?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

All of the above? None of the above? Answer it however you think is right. It’s an open ended question because it has open ended answers. This is your opportunity to show how you think. If you do that while talking about something incredibly personal or completely impersonal, it could still be a great extended essay.

I’ve yet to meet any two people here who approached the extended essay the same way.

How you analyze something is personal.

@JHS so I can talk about something specific to my personal life?

Of course. But you can also write only about a math problem, or Virgil, and it will still reveal a lot about who you are and how you think, which is what admissions cares about.

Show how your mind works.

this is a dumb question, but just wondering: which school has more prestige- Brown or UChicago?
