So by now we all know that Emory was named one of the 25 "New Ivies" by Newsweek and Kaplan. But did anyone catch this morning's Today Show where they not only talked about the "New Ivies" but singled out Emory in the opening to the segment.

More national exposure! Now maybe the people out here in California will begin to learn about Emory.

lol...ppl here in cal think about UCLA and UCB before emory..but don't get me wrong emory rocks!

dont worry over here in new york we get not name recognition either...sigh

you know what-I think it really boils down to what graduate schools/business think of Emory as. Plenty of big name companies who recruit top graduates recognize Emory for its quality in education/academics. I mean who cares if no one outside of the Southeast has heard of Emory. It is an excellent institution in itself and needs no ego boost in rankings unlike some other schools..

as long as i can get into harvard med i dont care

nice. i missed that. what did they say about emory?

Dsouthren, you are setting yourself up for some serious disappointment if you set your heart on Harvard med. For the sake of your mental health, just don't do that.

Tons of people outside the southeast have heard of Emory, btw.

haha i was saying that its realistically possible to get in from emory...besides, if my mental health was that weak, i would have gone crazy already from the fact that i'm going to emory and not the "sacred ivies"

In Nebraska, some of my compatriots probably STILL think that I am going to Embry Briddle to become a pilot, not Emory to become something other than a pilot.

And, to think, I choose Embry Riddle over the-ever-sacred Vanderbilt.

^ Does Vandy have more name recognition outside the Southeast? I live in the South so it doesn't really affect me but I'm curious.

It depends on what part of the northeast. Alot of New England Prep School kids go to Vandy. Also -- the SEC is a major sports conference. Most sports fans probably watched the NFL draft (Cutler went first round) on ESPN.

In my experience living in the midwest, it's staggering how much more name recognition there is for Vanderbilt than Emory. I'm guessing that a lot of this simply stems from the fact that Vanderbilt is in a major sports conference, the SEC, and a lot of people follow college sports. Also, geographically, Vanderbilt is closer to midwest states than is Emory. For instance, Vanderbilt is really not that far away from southern Illinois.

The average joe at my high school, honestly, did not know much about colleges. I can't tell you how many average joes, for all they know, think Emory is a community college or average university. Many high schoolers only concern themselves with those colleges in their local area, for one reason or another. And why shouldnt they? Many people don't have the grades and/or finacial resources to look elsewhere. Sure, from the media and popular culture, they recognize Ivy League colleges like Yale and Harvard are really awesome -- but without actively researching colleges, it's easy to never hear of colleges like Emory that, while rather academically buff themselves, are not quite the top ten in the nation.

Turn on ESPN, however, and you may very well stumble upon a Vanderbilt football game!

I think it's funny that as much as Vandy sucks at football, that seems to be what gets them the name rec.

this is so so true.

I don't think that top ten is worth its weight in gold. I mean Wash U was number ten and I feel that academically it is almost exactly Emory's equal. I agree that Emory isn't the academic powerhouse of a place like Harvard, but to me those ranked in the top twenty or so aren't seperated by that much.

Almost everyone I tell in NYC has heard of Emory... every doctor says "that's a great school" and most people I speak to know someone who went there and loved it...
