The UCLA Transfer FAQ

thanks ari. here’s another question:

so now that ive been admitted to UCLA, if i took another class at another community college during the summer to fulfill a major prereq not offered at my school, does it matter what grade i get? say i get a C… will i be okay?

I got admitted as an art history student but really want to double major in psychology as well.

On ASSIST that it says: “Transfer students must be admitted as Pre-Psychology
majors in order to major in Psychology. Students originally admitted under other
majors will not be permitted to change their major to Pre-Psychology or
Psychology or to double major in Psychology.”

Is there anyway around this? Or is it pretty much set that a double major in psychology isn’t allowed if you were admitted for another major? Thank you in advance!

“Studio - One occupant: Glenrock, Landfair, Margan, Gayley Towers, & Glenrock West units”

These are the most expensive, but are they the nicest? I put single studio as my top choice but are they in high demand? I do not want to room with someone, that is an absolute priority. Are there other housing options in Westwood I should look into?

can you explain what a usual class at UCLA contains as in length, size, etc.? I was looking at the schedule of classes and under the description it says “3 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion”, what does this mean?

also, is there anything you can me about the honors program? is it substantially more difficult or even worth doing?

sweetnezz998,

The average lecture for a lower-division class will be over 100 students. A discussion is a smallish meeting with a TA (about 15 to 20 students per hour) to review the lecture material and discuss with the TA.

The honors program is not that much more difficult, and it does let you take some interesting courses. However, I do not recommend doing it only for the gold seal on your diploma. Take it if you want to do some fun courses and maybe challenge yourself a bit more.

thank you so much, is the lecture class 3 hours long at once or is it split up into smaller intervals? and does every class come with a discussion component?

Ari or any other people who are in a 4-year:

do you have any experience with organic chemistry and/or biology series?

if so, what was your experience like? how difficult were they? why do a good portion (35-40% from what I hear) drop out of these classes?

sweetnezz,

Sometime it’s 3 hours in a day, sometimes it’s two 1.5 hour intervals. My experience was that the latter was more common.

tranfermeup,

A lot of people drop o-chem because it’s difficult. That’s really all there is to say about it. :p

I’ll repost my question for you.

I understand that my CC gpa matters a lot but a C will just make it drop (assuming I get a 4.0 this semester…which im on track to do) back to what it was when i got admitted, a 3.75. lol

So…UCLA college of L&S requires 60 units of upper div classes for graduation. If an upper div class qualifies as a GE class as well, then one can apply it to this 60 units in addition to GE requirements, right?

how do you go about declaring a minor?

chibiloopi,

It’ll be fine. One C won’t keep you out.

dasherwinator,

I’m under the impression that you’ll need to apply lower div units for GEs, but if that’s not the case it’s usually okay to “double dip.” Your mileage may vary, however, so always double check with a counselor.

sweetnezz998,

You walk into the department office and say you want to declare it. That’s seriously all there is to it.

UCLAri, how does the housing work, and if we pick priorities, how are we assigned those? Also, I have there is a special housing for MSA/PSA members. More info? Also, are vanpools popular and are the timings for vanpools flexible? Thanks! One more thing…how readily are single rooms available?

Hey, UCLAri, do you if it is okay to drop a class now, after you have been accepted to UCLA? Will my application be rescinded? It is a statistics class and I am a Geography major.

saba,

Priorities are based on “type” of housing: residence hall, suite, or apartment. You are assigned by availability and some sort of arcane formula known only by the gods of Kobol.

I don’t know what MSA/PSA is. Do tell!

Vanpools are popular and very readily available.

Single rooms are just short of impossible.

Barclays,

No, but you should tell admissions ahead of time and make sure everything is Kosher.

ah, bringin’ back the galactica references UCLAri… yess… yessss. how I miss thee, adama.

Awesome thread, UCLAri!

So, I was admitted to UCLA as a Comp Lit major, and to Berkeley as an English major. I really love UCLA, but have my sights set on the English major, especially since Berkeley got on board. My question: Can I change my major(from Comp. Lit. to English) if I choose to enroll at UCLA? And if so, how difficult will it(the switch) be?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Ari-thanks for all of the wonderful information. Do you know anything about UCLA’s vanpool service? If so, do they operate in the summer? TY!

JBravo,

You should have no problem switching your major. At all.

kc_sunshine101,

It runs year round, but I don’t know how the service is affected by summer. Check with them directly.
