The UCLA Transfer FAQ

Hi UCLAri, I have a question about prereq for UCLA. I am accepted to UCLA and I stated in my application that I will finish 2 prereq during summer session. However, I am waitlisted for that 2 classes during summer. And from my waitlist number, I do not think I will get in those classes. I also checked other colleges but either they are not offering these courses or they are all full. Is it ok for me to take those 2 prereq classes in UCLA during Fall? I heard they only look up to the spring quarter but I don’t know what to do with that 2 classes. Will they rescind my offer of admission?

UCLAtransfer,

I doubt it. I would call admissions on Monday and ask what they suggest, as they are usually quite flexible with issues that are “out of your hands.”

I have a few questions:

Can someone who’s admitted as an Econ major switch his/her major to Business Econ (once after transfer)?

If a person is struggling in Business Econ and wants to switch his/her major to Econ, is there any restrictions (for example, space limit) other than the GPA requirements? (2.0 for Econ I believe?)

Thank you very much.

Dude UCLAri, I dont have any questions, just wanted to thank you for helping everyone. We all really appreciate it.

How difficult is it to get season tickets to the football/basketball games? I’ll probably join The Den, but obviously I won’t be able to buy tickets until I’m completely registered. Tickets went up for sale to the general student population on March 2, so would they already be completely sold out? How does the lottery work for deciding who gets tickets?
When do students typically begin moving into their on-campus residences? UCLA football begins September 5, but classes don’t begin until September 22, so unless I’m living on campus prior to September 5, I probably won’t be able attend the first couple football games.
If I manage to get season tickets, will I be in the student section at the basketball games, or do I have to join a group for that?

When do we register for classes? Can I just do that online or is there an orientation I have to attend first? Is there any kind of priority registration or is it just sign-up-as-fast-as-you-possibly-can…?

Last thing (for this post), I completed about 100 units at my community college. I’m aware that many of them are going to get axed so that only 70 transfer. Do I need to speak to a counselor about which classes to keep/cut, or does UCLA decide for me?

Thanks again!

i’m majoring in political science and thinkin abt minoring in anthropology. for the polisci major, they require you to take 4 upp. div. classes from a different area, one being anthro. can i use those 4 classes for my anthro minor and polisci major? thanks =]

jenn…I wasn’t talking about you so stop getting all bent out of shape…I was talking about “balls”

Does anyone know what the difference is between “single room (one occupant)” and “single room (shared bath)” on the housing application? Isn’t that the same thing?

Thanks.

I never got season tickets, so I can’t say for certain, but I remember it being tougher for basketball than football. Getting into The Den is a good idea, though, if you want both.

Season tickets are probably gone. You can still get individual games though, I’m sure.

Move-in is the weekend before classes start.

IIRC, yes.

If you attend an orientation, then you’ll do it there. If not, you are assigned a time based on a priority system.

Units are figured out by an arcane system using a troupe of specially trained aardvarks that…

OK, well, the truth is that that’s all decided at the administrative end. In my days, they let people who have a ton of units increase their unit cap. I hear they stopped that, though.

clevername,

No, it’s different. Shared bath means that there is a bathroom between two rooms that is shared by both rooms.

I know this varies from person to person, but what’s the estimated cost of food/housing (dorm) per year? My decision is still pending, so I do not have any type of FA summary. I’m particularly interested in knowing this because I’m deciding whether to commute from home rather than live in the dorms if the price is too high.

limelight,

Rates are here: [2009-2010 Contract Housing Rates (1002804)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=744e24df52071110VgnVCM200000ddd76180RCRD)

Note that financial aid is adjusted based on your housing situation.

Thanks UCLAri. But what’re the differences between the meal plans? (premier, gold, blue, cub)

And what’s the difference between on-campus housing and undergrad univ. apartments? I noticed the latter doesn’t have a meal plan and there’s a lot more variety.

not UCLAri but i’m pretty sure they are just different levels of cost/swipes each week (meals)

My family lives 30 miles from campus, and my boyfriend lives slightly less than 20. I’m going to spend most weekends back home or at my bf’s place. So, my question, should I take my car with me? I don’t know where I’m going to live, but I already decided I’m not going drive my car to school (I’ll walk/bus there). I could always leave my car at my families home during the week… BUT I’m afraid of losing the autonomy. I mean, let’s say I’m craving Roscoe’s Chicken one Wednesday? Ah, lemme know your take UCLAri.

limelight,

Premier lets you use your swipes multiple times per meal period, so you can take a guest with you or pick up a late night snack even if it’s during the “dinner” period.

Apartments allow for an optional meal plan, but I recommend against it, as it’s awfully expensive.

Sopheee,

Taking a car can be nice, but the parking is quite expensive. You’ll find once you get on-campus you won’t need the car as badly as you think you might, and you’ll almost certainly find a bunch of friends with cars anyway. ;)

So Ari, is there an option to dorm with freshmen? I’m practically the same age as the incoming freshmen and wanted to room with people my age, not people who are 20+ since they might do things i’m not legally allowed to do (i.e. go to the bar).

I know they’ll assign me to a transfer room but how do i get out of that? I’m thinking of dorming in a hall, preferably Sproul or Reiber (if it finishes renovations by the fall). If not, maybe a Plaza like De Neve.

What is the “Craziness threshold” for photos to be used on BruinCards? Since I get to send in a picture on my own, would they decline a picture of me with a smile? …with a BIG smile and crazy eyes? …with sex hair and kanye west shades? …wearing a clown wig? …posing with my zoolander face?
What’s the craziest picture you’ve ever seen on a BruinCard?

I’m sporting a huge grin on my CA drivers license photo, and I get compliments every time I get carded.

I was accepted as a transfer for Fall 09, however, there have been several changes to the classes listed on my application.

On my app, I was supposed to have finished 60 credits/IGETC/all prereqs by the end of Spring 08. And then I got mono…and dropped my courseload down to 3 classes.

Meaning, now I will have 60 credits/IGETC/all prereqs completed by the end of the summer session at my CC.

I plan on reporting this on Tuesday (the first available day to report changes on the admitted students page)

Will this adversely affect my admissions offer? Or will UCLA defer my admissions offer? I’m not sure what to think!

chibi_loopi,

Housing is generally based on an arcane system that lacks rhyme or reason. Your best bet is to cross your fingers and see what you get. Odds are, though, that you’ll get some in the 20-range.

ball in close proximity,

I had a goofy smile on mine. I wouldn’t push it too much, though.

I saw someone whose photo was him with this huge handlebar mustache. That’s about the craziest I saw. Most people are too tired the morning of the picture to care.
