First off, congratulations to everyone who got into UCLA so far, I just got my decision letter and I got in! (sort of)

I'm a ccc honors student so I was able to apply for two majors - primary and backup. My first choice was Communications which I knew was a huge reach, especially since I have a low GPA (3.6), my secondary was Comparative Literature at the urging of my counselor (I had the prerequisites). So the day comes and I was not terribly surprised so see that I didn't get in for Comm. studies, but I did get in for com lit.

Here's the problem, and it's an incredibly stupid one on my part, I don't know another language other than English. My counselor urged com lit and I was like "ok, that sounds cool, we'll compare different literary texts!" I didn't make the connection in my mind that the comparing was for different texts in their original language. So here I am, having taken American Sign Language as my language requirement to expressly get OUT of learning a language - getting into UCLA Comparative Literature.

Yay.

I really want to go to UCLA! I live less than ten minutes away and I love the campus. Is there any way I could change my major to something else before I SIR? Obviously not comm studies but maybe something else less impacted? Has anyone heard of someone doing this? I could really use some help, I'm torn between being happy that I was accepted and feeling like a complete doofus!

You can switch to a non-impacted major. I believe that the English and History departments allow you to switch in even though they are technically impacted.

You can change to ANY major after you SIR, impacted or not. The only big thing that might hold you back is not having completed the pre-reqs for that major. If you haven’t, you can complete them at UCLA, but you might have to bargain with your graduating in two years.

…The fact that you think ASL is a class to get you OUT of taking a language makes me sad. Maybe they taught you signed english there, but ASL is a complete, distinct language. Anywho.

I’m pretty sure a few majors are closed off…biz econ, psych, soc, comm, etc. Maybe I’m wrong, though. English would probably be a good choice, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t let you switch. Or, you know, take a language class there. :p

@newsoul I meant absolutely no disrespect to American Sign Language or the deaf community, I loved my time in ASL class and learned a lot. When I say “get out of” I was thinking of the verbs and sentence structures and gender and all the aspects of traditional written language, I’m a much more visual learner and I connected with ASL. I don’t mean that it was easier, just better suited for me. I should have chosen my words better :-)

You can switch to most non-impacted majors. Switch at orientation or during fall. Contact the dept you want to switch to, most have minimum requirements. Example, Anthro dept will allow you to switch after completing 2 pre-reqs. You can also take a few Comm classes as electives. Congrats!
