The UCLA Transfer FAQ

Thanks a lot for the information

I really don’t understand how the TAG program works ): And what’s the IGETC stuff?
Can some one please explain?
THANKS!
(I’m starting community college this fall :open_mouth: )

UCLA does not offer a Transfer Admission Guarantee. The nearest thing they offer is the Transfer Alliance Program.

If the community college that you will be attending offers TAP, a program consisting of honors courses, I recommend you sign up.

Here is a list of CCCs that offer TAP:
[Transfer Alliance Program - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/ADM_CCO/tap.htm#TAP)

IGETC is The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum

Go to your CCC’s transfer center and they have an IGETC sheet of courses at your CCC that fulfill requirements to UCLA.

I also recommend you visit the website assist.org frequently so you are prepared for course planning and don’t miss any pre-requisites that your major and UCLA require.

[url=<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST]Welcome to ASSIST](<a href=“igetc.org - igetc Resources and Information.”>http://www.igetc.org/)

good luck kid and enjoy your time, join clubs and get involved at your CCC, you might be surprised to find out that its not that bad.

hey

I have a very small appetite, so i’m thinking of getting the 14 meal a week plan.

But I’m not sure because i don’t want to risk being hungry…

Do most people use their 19 meals??

I think I am going to choose the 14 meal plan too. You can always upgrade at anytime. If you want to downgrade I hear their is a fee. If you plan on going home on weekends or going out w/ friends on the weekends the 14 is definitely the way to go. I also heard a lot of people don’t wake up for breakfast & that it is too early and they may keep a fridge in their room and then eat fruit or something light before classes…

i decided on the 19 meals…

it’s only like 100 dollars more…but you have a point shawnee…

i just didn’t want to worry about being hungry

The TAP agreement is interesting, I’m signing up for it and gonna try to clear all the classes over the Winter and Spring (maybe summer classes too). Possibly I can change my Stats to a Stats Honors course and then go nuts in it to make sure.

how important are extracirriculars to UCLA when applying :open_mouth: ?

Chance me!

Major: Psychology
College American River college in sacramento
UC GPA: 3.82 (hopefully 3.84 by the fall of 10’)
Applying to:UCLA, UC Davis
Prereqs: DONE!
IGETC: Will be done by the fall of 10’
TAG/TAP: UC Davis TAG

EC’s:

 1. Volunteer at a adult day care center, helped Alzheimer patients with mental exercises like playing board games, helping them do art work, assisted the physical therapist in leading exercises with patients with all kinds of mental difficiencies, assisted in walking and physical therapy with patients who were basically almost bedridden or wheelchair ridden.
 2. Volunteer at a hospice. Helped families especially if their loved one has passed away from an emotional standpoint. Worked with the patients to help them cope with their lives especially for those who still are in denial that they will eventually pass away.
 3. General and Social Psychology tutor in the summer of 08’. Chemistry tutor during the spring of 09’ led beacon tutoring in an integrated organic/biochem class. Helped out fellow students mentally raise their grades from failing to passing grades.
 4. Filipino club member on campus

Essays: Doing them right now, will state the above ec’s and how it changed my life, how it relates to the major that I am studying for.

Do the type of classes you take matter? For example, to fufill the physical science segment of my IGETC i have the option to take physics or geology. They will both fufill my requirement. I am going to apply as a biz econ major so I not a science major or anything. I dont think it would matter but do you guys think ?

a bit (huge) of a long shot, but i’ll do it for s**** and giggles

Major: Math/Applied Sciences
GPA: 3.09 -_- (hopefully it will be up better this Spring)
IGETC: done by Spring 2011
TAP: nope
College: Skyline College/City College of San Francisco
Pre-Reqs: some of it done
EC’s: work as a math tutor for nearly 4 years, 5 on the AP calculus(AB) exam

I know, I bet you people are wondering why is this guy with such a low GPA applying to UCLA. One can only dream and get a perspective right? :P

@ yssuhi: for IGETC classes it shouldn’t really matter what class you take (if you don’t need it) as long as you fulfill the requirement.
@ vintagesoul: I don’t know about your chances, but I heard math majors can get in with lower GPAs than others :), so you might have some kind of a chance…
I was wondering about my own chances for UCLA. I want to major in “Linguistics and Psychology”…
My GPA is a 4.0, with plenty of A+'s. I’m a CCC transfer and I will have the IGETC completed by the end of Spring 2011. I have mediocre EC’s, including tutoring, Dean’s list… I started college a quarter late (I’ll only have 5 quarters of CCC when I transfer) due to illness. I’m able to achieve the unit requirement because of AP credits and a greater than average course load. I’ll have like 100-105 units after Spring.
The problem is that I can’t complete all pre-reqs because the courses of “Into to Cognitive Science” and “Research Methods in Psychology” are not offered at my CCC anymore… Will this be a problem? I’ll have the linguistics course, intro to psych course, psychological stats course, 1 year of a foreign language and 2 years of another foreign language completed though.
What do you guys think my chances are?

@deanzatransfer

If your CCC des not offer the classes listed under “pre-reqs” on assist.org UCLA, or any other UC for that matter, will not hold you to them. In other words they do not expect you to go out of your way, to another CCC, and take these classes.

With that said, if another student’s CCC does offer those classes and has a similar GPA UCLA would definitely prefer that student due to their ability to graduate more rapidly after transfer.

All that to say, your chances are good. With a 4.0 and a decent application you should be in.

Please tell me my chances!

Applying to UCLA (did TAG’s to UCSD and UCD, but UCLA is my number 1 pick) for a Physiological Science Major. (Doing a TAP with UCLA, as a Foothill Community College Honors Student)

Current GPA: 3.42
EC’s: President of Indian Club @ my college, English Professors paid teacher’s assistant, tutored for English on campus for three quarters and will continue to do it till i transfer (until spring 2011), Volunteer at Kaiser Hospital (500+ hrs), Research assistant at NASA Ames in a biology lab

Could someone please tell me what my chances are for UCLA, considering my GPA and EC’s? Thanks so much!

@anandrenga2001: With a TAP, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be admitted, unless your GPA is ridiculously low (which it is not) or if you write a horrendous essay…
So don’t worry
I wish my CC had a TAP program…

@deanzatransfer thanks for the input! you go to de anza? i went there for fall quarter…i’m actually at de anza’s sister college foothill right now haha

I have a question, I’m a first semester freshman at SMC and UCLA is my top transfer school, however I am a non traditional major as in I’m majoring in Acting. Now I’ve heard that for us Acting majors the audition is the most important thing but I’m still a little confused about our pre-requistes.

When I went to look on Assist.org they gave no specific lower division major preparation for the Acting/Theatre major, how is that possible?? I’m a little worried because my current curriculum at SMC is designed for serious intensive acting/audition preparation.

Another question is, is IGETC recommended for us Acting majors?? I know it’s not recommended for majors such as the hard sciences or engineering but does that include us actors since we have such a non traditional major… I’m confused whether I should follow IGETC or just focus on preparing for my UCLA audition by taking all the Theatre Arts and Music courses.

Chance me?

Applying as Business Economics major

GPA: 3.82 after Fall semester

TAP and Igetc done

Prereqs: All done but Calc 2 and Managerial Accounting, which I am taking both in Spring. Taking managerial in honors.

ECs:
-Interning at a financial firm currently
-President of stock market club, member of business leaders society, and accounting society
-also member of phi theta kappa honor society
-Manager of small business for the past year
-Etc.

Essay: It is fairly strong

I know that my gpa is a little below the avg admitted for bizecon, but i’m hoping that my TAP and ECs will carry me over. Another one of my concerns is that I received a B in Calc 1 last spring, but I have a 4.0 since last spring, and will end up with 12 As and 2 Bs.

What you guys think

Please chance me:
GPA: 3.53
Major: American Lit & Culture
TAP Certified?: YES
Pre-reqs: only 2 complete, the other courses were not available at my CC. I’m taking two literature classes right now. They don’t fulfill the pre-req, but they’re similar.

How much do missing pre-reqs hurt, even if they weren’t offered in my CC? Applicant numbers for this major is going up, so competition is too of course…

what are my chances of switching to a pure English major if I’m admitted? American Lit & Culture is offered by the English department, so probably not as difficult?

Also it states this on the english dept. page:

“At this time, the Department has not placed a limit on the number of undergraduate English or American Literature & Culture majors at UCLA. The Department does stipulate that to declare either Bachelor of Arts program as your major, you must not be on academic probation. If you are a continuing student, you must have completed one quarter at UCLA.”

^ if you can get in despite the missing pre-reqs (I hear UCLA is strict about the FL req) then it probably won’t be too hard changing majors since American Lit is in the same DEPARTMENT as English. That certainly helps in this situation…
