The ultimate hook

This just came to my mind a few days ago: Would a URM who qualified for USAMO be practically assured a spot at top colleges (assuming competitive GPA, reasonable SATs, etc.)? I personally thought that it wouldn't be enough, but then again how many URMs have you heard of qualifying for USAMO....of course if we're talking MOP then I'd probably say it's a given XD

(I'm not trying to sound racist, just gauging how much certain factors help in the admissions process...and no I'm not a URM so I'm not asking about myself lol)

I don't know what the "ultimate" hook would be, but winning a Nobel Prize would certainly help your cause.

What is a URM, and what are USAMO and MOP?

URM= under represented minority and USAMO is a prestigious math olympiad.

MOP = Math Olympiad Program. Top 30 USAMO scorers + top 30 freshmen. I'd say he or she would get into all.

especially as a girl so qualified in math....

When is AMC/AIME this year? Senoirs can participate, si?

Wouldn't most who qualified get into just about any school?

no dank08, it depends on your race unfortunately.
US used to be racist against black, not it's racist against asians.

anyway, if urm girl got USAMO then it's basically garantee (assuming everything else is "decent")
if it's urm, then he has a great great chance, but not a garantee.
if it's a non-urm girl, she has a great great chance at tech schools or schools that have separate app for engineering school.

You guys are oversimplifying. There is no such thing as a "guarantee" to get into every university you apply to. Sure URM, USAMO qualifier, female are all going to help your application, but it's not like the aggregate sum of them will ensure a spot at a top college.

No, if you were a child actor who discovered the cure for a major tropical disease and won the Pulitzer Prize for a best-selling novel, besides solving the P vs. NP problem, being nationally ranked in football and crew and feeding the entire homeless population of America, that would be the ultimate hook. Nothing else will guarantee you admissions.

The only thing that guarantees a spot at top colleges is an acceptance letter from said college. Provided it wasn't forged.

I would say having a couple of billions in your trust fund is the ultimate hook!

I'd say being the son of the President is a pretty nice hook..

How do you take the AIME tests?
Where/When etc...?

I wonder if anyone would check if I claimed to be a daughter of President Bush. . .

You have to pass AMC 12 or AMC 10 first to qualify for AIME. You take AMC/AIME/USAMO at your school.

ok, a urm female who got in USAMO has a GREAT chance, 99.999% of getting in.
so it's not garentee.

they acutally sell a ultimate hook at academy for only like 30$ so i don't kno if that would help

I bought one. Got accepted to all 15 Ivies.
