Amazing recommendations and essays

Guys I got rejected and would like to send an appeal, however, when i went to the Admissions Appeal page it says that “You do not have any active applications on file that are eligible for the appeal system.” and “You are not eligible to submit an appeal at this time.”

Why can’t I submit an appeal to UT Austin?

@cheetagirl121
Yes. 3 essays 3 recs. She had her app in by early sept. I doubt they filled BME in 4 weeks but who knows. So much for holistic review. If it’s a yield thing that’s disheartening to make the choice for her.

Son #1 admitted to Physics a month ago. Son #2 denied yesterday (CS 1st choice, RTF 2nd choice). OOS. 31 ACT, 3.87 u/w GPA, a lot of ECs, holds down job. The message said he could attend another school, then try to transfer in. We are going to try to appeal to be considered as a transfer student now as he will receive his Associates Degree simultaneously when graduating HS. Not sure it will work. If not, both boys will head to UIUC, where they have already been awarded merit scholarships and offered Honors.

Are appeals successful frequently or rarely?

Rarely. And usually only if there is an error in the record (wrong transcript, test score, etc).

@dansmoaustin UT doesn’t fill based on application date, so it should have nothing to do with when she applied. It really sounds like there was some type of error there. I think it is worth appealing if your daughter wants to go to UT but she has a lot of good options. With a scholarship at A&M, I don’t think I would choose UT for engineering unless she hates College Station.

Definitely have a solid appeal case. I would try to go in person if possible.

If I remember correctly, your kids are from Iowa? I’m not sure that I would recommend UT over an affordable in state option or scholarships elsewhere. I’m assuming that you would be paying OOS tuition at UT? I think UT is great for in state kids but don’t quite get the attraction for OOS kids willing to pay OOS tuition. Austin is the best small city to be in but they can wait until they graduate elsewhere then come to Austin.

I am out of state (Maryland)

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
Hook 'Em Horns!
I really liked Austin as a city when I visited and I’ve been a Longhorns football fan for life. It’s a dream come true but I’m going to have to see how the finances play out compared to my other schools

BTW, neither of my kids were attracted to UT because it’s HUGE. My D is really interested in a small LAC in Iowa! These kids are so funny.

Hi everyone,

First off, congratulations to everyone getting in. For those that didn’t get accepted, I share your pain. I can’t believe I didn’t get in…I was (and still am) heartbroken. Though I’ve read countless times that getting rejected from college is not a rejection of you as a person, it’s still hard to not be depressed after seeing you weren’t accepted.
Though this may be wishful thinking, I feel like this is a mistake. Friends of mine that have gotten in, and a few people on threads on CC, have gotten into CS with similar or even worse stats than mine (though I understand stats aren’t everything).

Do you guys think I have a good shot at appeals?

Here is my stuff: (I’m Indian, considered in-state)
Academics:
3.98 UW, 5.45/6 W
9/535 at an in-state high school (1.7%)
35 ACT, 2290 SAT (1550 M+V and 2350 superscore)
Subject test scores: Chem: 760, math II: 800, world history: 800, us history: 790
10 AP classes (19 by end of this year), with fives on 9 exams, and 1 four
Took or taking most challenging coursework, including AP Chemistry, physics c, biology, calculus bc, stat, and so on
National Merit Finalist (233 PSAT)
1st Place UIL Spelling in District, 3rd in Regionals, 13th in State 2014-2015
All As every year

Other:
Elected President of Math Club this year, member last year
member of computer science club for 2 years, did competitions regularly
band for 2 years
NHS 3 years
worked over the summer at Kumon as a tutor
85 volunteer hours
good essays
great rec letters (one from AP Calc and Stat teacher, other from AP English 3 teacher)

I applied for CS first choice and EE second choice, but instead was offered to choose from a list of alternate majors (which unfortunately doesn’t even have a natural science or engineering major available).

As an aside, I didn’t send in my mid-year report to UT. Is that required?

Anyways, sorry for the long post, but I could use some advice on the appeals process.

Thank you, Rahul

@dansmoaustin UT would be that school that talks about how they try to get more girls into engineering, then go and reject one of the most qualified female applicants of our generation :confused:

If I’m being honest, they either just blew right by her app or something in it totally turned them off… Did she come across as arrogant in her essays? That can be a deadly mistake. Also, did you see her recs? I have a feeling that one of her recs must have been pretty bad to keep her out with those stats.

If neither of these are true, UT clearly either made a mistake or rejected her because she was overqualified and they felt she was applying as a safety school (Universities have been known to reject students that they felt were not really interested because they could get into wayyy better schools, as is the case with your D)

@Rahulbarcafan pm me pls

@thenoah6624
Her essays were not arrogant IMHO. She is so quiet about her self. Did not see her recs but guessing they were good - she got in EA to ND and UVA. And not sure how she could have shown more interest in UT. She did a research program in the biomed dept and went to the admissions session for biomed. Yes she applied to several schools but these days you have to. She knew UT and TAMU were the financially sound choice if she want to go to grad school. Again it’s just a need to understand it for me.

Rejected for Electrical Engineering

International Student (from India)

SAT 1800 (560CR 720CM 540CW)

Awesome EC’s and Essays, taken the IB board. Was a reach for me, but I thought I would get in as I got admitted into UIUC and deferred from RICE. Probably it is the Auto-admit thing that sucks, because my cousin, who is stays in Dallas was in the top 8% or something with a lower much SAT score than mine, got into UT for Mechanical Engineering! :frowning:

@dansmoaustin It does seem there is a mistake with your D’s application. Definitely appeal - have them check her AI and PAI score to see if they were calculated properly.

Accepted into Mechanical Engineering

General Comments: I was worried about being Asian and not in the top 8% of my class. Was in despair since November 17 when I sent out my application since I didnt get a reply till yesterday. I think my essays helped since I noticed that most top 8ers in my school didnt write a quality essay and got rejected from their majors. Also I took the December ACT which put me at a 2200 sat equivalent range so that must have helped.
