I think CHEME was second choice. Son’s at TAMU and you’re right about the attrition rate in ENGR – over half that start will not finish and transferring into another department with a low gpa will be challenging at best. TAMU and TTU accept students into engineering and you have to earn your way into a major. Those systems are brutal on URMs, so UT will never go to it. D was at least offered Math and Physics as options, along with African Studies and such. UT was not high on her list of schools just shocking she didn’t get into BME. Clearly inferior students are being accepted under the premise that they can coach them up. I bet that’s not the strategy in football.
@sugarlandp
How do you know what else she was offered? Is that the link you click on to see other majors? It was unclear…and yes…coaching up in Org Chem should be interesting…its a killer and a weed out class.
i dont understand how i got accepted to UT and not A&M with an act of 25 and out of state resident
“Sometimes it’s as simple as they don’t want your kind.” I just don’t know what to say about that comment. You are obviously referring to UT giving preference to URM’s. And how do you know what is on that Hispanic kids application? Your D applied to UT and took her chances. There is no guarantee to college admissions. None.
Sounds like she has some great choices. Let her move on as your attidude will not be helpful to her in the long run.
I don’t know anyone’s child, and there’s a lot of second guessing. I think my advice for anyone reading this thread for future years is to never take any admission for granted. Build your list in such a way that you KNOW you’ll have options.
A&M works on a different system. They accept in a major until that major is full. So, if you want engineering and even if you are auto admit, APPLY EARLY there or you’ll be frozen out. UT’s system is different and you don’t know your PAI. You can’t count on admission to any specific major – and everyone thinks that their essays and recommendations are fantastic. Sometimes they’re not. I’m not saying that is the case here with anyone’s child because again, I don’t know you and I haven’t read your child’s essays or seen their accomplishments.
That said, I hate it when anyone uses the term “obviously inferior” to refer to any other child. You don’t know that kid – you don’t know what he/she has overcome. And for all you know, he/she might be nationally ranked in some hobby or sport that takes place outside of school; sometimes kids can surprise you and sometimes the MOST accomplished kids are very humble and you’d never know it.
I like the idea of having a general engineering major category for those who don’t make BME or ChemE or PE or any of the really hard-to-get majors. I actually think general engineering makes more sense and like the schools that have moved to it. Then you could do admissions to engineering, let kids figure out which one appeals to them in an environment where they’ll have more exposure to different types of engineering and can make a more knowledgeable decision. And it might be less bewildering to those who are trying to understand a very complicated and opaque process.
nvm, figured out how to edit my first comment…
Accepted to Mccombs. I was honestly very nervous that I wouldn’t be, but I am very grateful for the admission.
I was already nervous with the 40% admission rate, but these stories are making me feel worse.
I graduated from UT-Arlington 5 years ago and am applying as an in-state transfer for COLA.
I’ve been admitted to Ohio State-Columbus which is ranked evenly with UT-Austin, but I would like to stay near family and have lower tuition.
I haven’t received a decision yet! So nervous!
Accepted in state to neuroscience
At the time of admission the scores I sent them were
680 cr 630 m 630 w
4.1 weighted gpa. Like 3.7 uw
Ranked 150 of 1250 (Plano east high school… Lol)
Good ecs: technology director of an organization providing education to orphans in Africa. Memeber of greater dallas youth orchestea and 2 concerts with the Dallas wind synphony.
As well as urm
Still see a lot better stats students than I rejected. Looks like this year was super competitive. Feel blessed about admission, and to all those who weren’t im sure many of you will attend incredible universities and be highly successful
Very well said @piesquared !
I know that in addition to the website statement, in every UT session I attended- I heard over & over “just because you are admitted to the university does not guarantee you admitted to your major.” This year’s stories certainly prove that point. Future applicants, please keep that in mind!
Based on stats- looks like the overall admissions rate was around 30% but, obviously there were some majors where it was much, much lower than that.
@sugarland11 sounds like you have a strong case for appeal
My S did not get accepted. They want him to attend UTSA then transfer after the first year. He is not top 8%.
But, good luck and congrats to those that were accepted.
@JackM82 what classes did you take and what major are you getting/do you want to get at UT Austin? i’m trying to see if CAP is for me
@pharelIwilliams Geology,PreCalc,PolySci, Microeconomics, English. Im going to be an Economics major. I would recommend doing something other than CAP if you intend on majoring in something other than COLA
Not to sound all high and mighty or whatever, but I would just like to comment and ask people to please refrain from calling other students inferior, or talking about how you’re confused that lower stat students got in over you. For 1. It’s just rude, and those students could see that and be really hurt. I personally don’t care, I know my SAT was low but my grades, passion, and ACT were high enough, but I do know plenty of students that make up for low scores by being amazing people that try hard even if it doesn’t come as easy to them, and that could be pretty hurtful to see people saying they don’t get how they got in. But 2. Face it, almost no matter where you apply, there’s going to be people with higher scores than you that DIDN’T get in, and people with lower scores that DID get in. Getting in is about more than just “hey look at how well I did on these tests.” College admissions take into account a ton of stuff and getting rude or “deserve-y” or judgey isn’t going to help anyone. Honestly a lot of medium students that I know do better than the naturally smart people just because they realize how amazing some opportunities are and don’t act like they’re owed those opportunities so work harder.
Basically just realize those “inferior students” or whatever, are people with dreams and motivation. Alright, preachiness over lol.
^Amen.
Would like to make a recommendation:
Please search YouTube: UT Admissions Guy (Kevin Martin) & watch his most recent video- Receiving your admissions decision 2016. (the others too if you are interested).
Good information.
@JackM82 lol we’re literally on the same boat! I would go to UT Arlington and also want Economics. One more thing, did you use any AP credits or planning to use them in the future? I’m kinda confused as to how they work in the CAP program and so I’m not sure if I should take the AP tests this year if I won’t even be able to use the credits
@pharelIwilliams Im waiting to claim my AP credit until I get to UT. If you have any other questions about CAP or UTA dont hesitate to comment here or message me.
@bookmom7 I am a Junior and UT is my dream school. I am applying next year to sports management which is in the college of education. When you say admitted to the school, you mean auto-admit, right? What I’m saying is, I won’t be competing with a student applying for an engineering major, right??
