@pschnee Some students are auto admitted and then wait for to see if they get into their major, if you are applying for the college of education you will be competing with others applying for the same major. At least this is my understanding, I’m just a mom of a student that is going there in the fall.
@pschnee - yes, for auto-admits- next year in-state top 7%. Again- you can be admitted to the University but, not get into your first choice major.
You are correct- some majors are more competitive (engineering, compsci, business) than others & you need to focus your application on why you would be a good fit for the UT sports management dept.
@bookmom7 ok thanks, I’m out of state so that doesn’t apply to me. So basically, the auto-admit just guarantees that you will get some major, even if you don’t like it, which is what you mean by “admitted to the university”
@pschnee - yes, the Texas law requires the certain % guaranteed admittance but, not major.
OOS- very difficult because few seats are left. Again- make sure you work hard on your app & essays and prove to the adcom that you deserve a spot at UT.
Good Luck next year.
ok thanks @bookmom7
I didn’t apply to UT. But after reading this thread, it’s quite apparent why tons of people from my high school (an extremely competitive public) transferred to a different high school in order to get a better class rank.
Cap’d. Kinda surprised cuz I’m international.
I thought they only offer CAP to Texas residents so I only expected either acceptance or denial.
International from China
SAT 1870 (490R+740M+640W)
IELTS 7.0 (6.5R+7.0L+7.0W+7.0S)
@Nevets04 Most school districts have found a way to put a stop to that by not ranking those who move in later than a certain date etc.
My DD did get accepted to CS in Dec. with a 2250 SAT, top 1% ranking, in state, NMF, and normal HS ECs including swim team captain and some state art awards. She has taken 2 years of CS, participated in math contests and is taking all the harder math and physics related courses.
I know this thread keeps reminding us that there is auto admission to UT but not to your major. That being said, I never thought that my DD would not be accepted to CS but this thread has proved how wrong I could of been. I really understand the frustration of the students and their families that did not get accepted to CS and engineering with great stats and ECs. I did not realize how much of a holistic review was happening at the assignment of majors level.
For the students who did not get accepted to their major, it does sound like most will be going to A&M which is UTs loss. It is a great school but it does have a totally different environment than UT as well as having to fight for your major again as a freshman. I do know that last year’s first round of assigning engineering majors, 750 students applied for 150 spots in mechanical engineering. My DDs, (we thought other safety,) is UT Dallas. We like it a lot, great facilities, smart kids, and the campus keeps getting better and better. I think you also apply directly to your program, we did for CS. It is still on my DD short list but it also is different than UT.
Congratulations to all the students who got in and to their preferred major and to those who didn’t, I understand your frustration. Getting into UT engineering shouldn’t be like getting into an Ivy. You expect more from your publically funded state flagship.
For goingnuts, piesquared, and bananasomething: I am probably the last person you want to chastise for non-PC syntax as related to University admissions practices, but you asked for it. I chose the appropriate words for the situation. We are talking about two children with IDENTICAL educational opportunities, who attended the exact same middle and high schools. This other student is not a mystery and not a closet genius. One child was clearly and always better than the other—sports, grades, leadership, you name it. UT decided they would rather offer the INFERIOR student a spot in BME. We are not talking about Abigail Fisher. Fisher is clearly inferior to my D. UT chose a non-auto admit over #1, with the only explanation being race. One may argue the merits of a “holistic” review in a close competition, but this was not close. Racial discrimination, whether against black, white, or green people, bothers me. UT has practiced it for years, has argued in favor of it before the Supreme Court, and does not deny it. Lastly, if you think your child doesn’t know he or she is inferior to others you are mistaken. As a former football player, no one had to tell me Earl Campbell was a superior running back to me—I knew it by watching. I guess some parents on CC prefer to shelter their children from the realities of the world. Lastly, parents on CC should be mad at UT, not me. You should storm the Capital and demand UT be defunded until they stop discriminating. Of course, unless you personally benefit.
I am not sure about whether race or gender played a role. It is probably a blessing my S (white male)did not get in because he would have felt as if he should attend there and I really think a mid-size college would work better. Having said that he has 3.5 UW and 4.3 weighted, is an AP scholar with distinction, has a 33 on the ACT with a 35 stem score. He is a good student but not top 7 percent so we knew his chances were slim. But his cousin who is from a school in South Texas had a 25 ACT and was an auto admit. The cousin did not have any AP courses. It is hard thinking that race plays any role but if that is the law then they have the right to use it in their holistic approach.
@sugarlandp There is no need to argue your case on a forum where you present your facts and the “inferior” kid does not get a rebuttal. Take your case up with UT.
The Fisher case reveals a surprisingly formulaic approach use by UT to review applicants. There is an AI and PAI calculation and it turns out that the majority of “inferior” admits by AI scores were in fact other whites. So it is curious that Fisher et al continue to think that but for race they would have been admitted. I wonder what the minority kids who had better AI scores than Fisher attribute their denial to…wait, they’ve moved on with their life.
Feeling the pain of rejection from UT… Didn’t get into ChemE as 1st choice and I don’t think I got into Chemistry as my second choice. I’m currently valedictorian at a public school in Texas.
@sugarlandp If the tone of your D’s essays was anything close to the attitude of your comments, you may find the answers to your questions there. As @JAMCAFE has stated, AI and PAI calculations are quite straight forward. Whereas your D may have had the higher AI score, your D’s hispanic classmate may have had a higher PAI due to essays and other personal achievements rather than race.
The topic of Fisher v. UT Austin is a worthy subject and I have no problem it being vetted here on CC, but please, NOT in the Decision thread. I think it’s own thread would be best served by all. Thank you and good luck to all on their own final decisions.
UT Austin uses a holistic review process that factors in many things besides GPA and test scores. We tend to concentrate on GPA (rank) and scores because they are really the only two things we can compare on this forum equally between students.
When comparing yourself against another student, you have no way of knowing what that person’s special circumstances are even if you know them. They could have a non-visible disability or illness they have been fighting since childhood. They could have a special volunteer project that you know nothing about. Everyone claims to have a great essay but really, how many of them truly are and truly stand out? I’m not saying that the admissions process isn’t flawed but there are so many other factors that UT Austin looks at besides class and test scores. This is a good thing. Compare it to Cal Poly where it is 100% computerized and you earn points for gpa, test scores, number of lab science classes, number of parents who didn’t graduate high school, etc. It’s a great system for some but I pity the poor student whose grades fell due to fighting cancer but has now way to express that on the app.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: The decisions thread is supposed to be for decisions ONLY. Please start new threads if you want to discuss anything else.
