The Weirdest Essay Prompt... Ever.

In light of this super hectic time in preparing college applications, essays, and recommendations, I thought it’d be fun to take a break and discuss some weird or quirky essay prompts you’ve responded to, or have to respond to.

One writing supplement I’m currently working on asks, “If you were to write the story of your life until now, what would you title it and why?”

What outside-the-box essay prompts have you encountered? Did you enjoy them more than the standard, or did you find them to be more difficult?

I can’t remember it exactly, but I think I saw a prompt one that said write page 267 or something of your autobiography.

Wake Forest has a prompt that is create a top ten list and provide a theme. They also have a title your autobiography supplement and a prompt about the Hamilton musical.

The ones for my honors college included “If you were in charge of making a new Mt. Rushmore, who would you put on it and where would it be?” and “What’s on your bucket list?”

All of UChicago’s prompts

U Chicago has had some doozies. Here is a link to some past questions:

I always think you can tell a solid UChicago prospect immediately by how they respond to these question. My D2 loved their questions, would much rather have written 10 essays on their prompts than any other prompt from other schools. She wrote on the Susan Sontag “silence remains, inescapably, a form of speech.” question.

“Create two questions that drive you.”

“What’s your favorite riddle and why?”
