The "Where to eat good food under $5" Thread

Hey CC,

I know there is another thread about good food around Shattuck, but I wanted to make this thread so people could know about places with good food for under $5.

Most of the food that I buy is more than $5, so my money goes away fast in a week.

Are there any places with a lot of food for less?

For example, Bongo Burgers (which by the way are delicious) are around $5!
I usually go to Jack in the Box or KFC in Oakland for cheap food.

I get a big burger, fries, 2 tacos, and a soda for under $4.50!

Thanks!

I am sure if you wander around near the campus ,or ask other students or look on YELP you will find plenty of cheap eats ! Probably Mexican and Chinese are good bets . I eat mostly 10 dollar entrees now ,so I can’t be of more help .

there’s not much.
chinese food on channing has one combo for 5 bucks. gordo’s has regular burrito no guac/sour cream for 5. most are about 6.50+

McDonalds
Jack in the Box
Taco Bell

it’s too bad we have to travel ~20 minutes to get there.

I don’t understand why the campus doesn’t allow fast food to be on or near campus. We’re broke college students. Why do we have to pay ~$7 for meals that don’t even fill us up? It’s stupid.

Popeyes Tuesdays 2 pieces for $1.29
Costco (outside windows) Polish sausage/hot dog plus drink+ refills 3.50
In and Out burger and fries less than 5 bucks
Subway
Quiznos

Top Dog-$3.50/dog
Panchos-Rice/bean/cheese burritos are around $4, I think. Same with La Burrita.
The new sandwich place Toaster Oven has some sandwiches for $4.50ish
Blondies-Forget the exact price, but around $3.50/slice for pepperoni, slightly cheaper for cheese (I think Fat Slice further down Telegraph is also around $3-4/slice)
Chinese Express on Channing-Fried rice and/or chow mein/egg roll/entree combo for $4
Crepe-a-go-A lot of the crepes here are <$5, but not all of them.

There’s a McDonalds sorta close to where I live (it’s the one close to Bart). Except I always order the 20 piece chicken mcnuggets (with four different dipping sauces) and large fries every time I go there, so it’s around $8.00. Thankfully I don’t eat there very often otherwise I’d probably cut my life expectancy in half.

Hmm those are good suggestions nillawafer!

$3.95 Pepe’s Buffet voucher from MunchonMe.com

GET IT.

Also:

$4.99 deli sandwiches @Sam’s Market
$3.99 wraps and salads @Trader Joe’s
$3.99 burritos @Berkeley Student Food Collective
starving student special @Tako Sushi
food from that new Asian food cart on Sproul (Heavenly something)

$3.25/$4.30 “Happy Hour” (3-6PM) specials at Sun Hong Kong (next to Yogurt Park)
$4.50 sandwiches and breakfast burritos at Caffe Mediterraneum
McDonald’s (on University x Shattuck) $1 menu

Consider cooking. It’s both cheaper and healthier than fast food.

Any good recipes for poorly trained chefs like us?? :frowning: lol!

I would think UC Berkeley students care more about nutrition- all that sodium and cholesterol and sugar isn’t the best nutrition … Liquidus has the right idea !

@Diivio: Thanks! That’s partly the product of 1 1/2 yrs of seaching for cheap deals on yelp and just exploring on my own.

Yeah, cooking is cheaper and healthier, but in addition to being strapped for cash, Berkeley students are also short on time. I get some cereal and fruit for breakfast. I just make sandwiches for lunch–some bread, turkey/ham, cheese, spinach slices, and maybe some hummus/mayo. Not the tastiest thing ever, but it gets the job done quickly and fairly cheaply. And luckily, my parents will occasionally bring me some food every few weeks that lasts me for dinner. However, for those that don’t have parents in the area, maybe just cook some pasta, drain it of water, while simultaneously cooking some chopped veggies in a pan (or use a bag of frozen mixed veggies if you don’t have the time to chop vegetables), combine with pasta, add some spices as desired, top with some store-bought marina sauce, and you’re done. Shouldn’t take more than 30-45 minutes, at the most. If you’re a meat person, buy some chicken and cook it alongside the veggies. Pretty basic.

I also like this recipe, as it’s cheap and tasty (though not as healthy): get some maruchan ramen, but before opening the bag, take a blunt object and start hitting the bag over to break up the ramen into smaller pieces. Then, cook the ramen in water as normal–but don’t add the little pouch of powder just yet. Meanwhile, get a bag frozen peas/string beans/mixed veggies, and start frying them in a little bit of oil in a pan. (chop up the string beans into smaller pieces beforehand). Get an egg, scramble it in the pan while the veggies are cooking. Drain the ramen of water after it’s cooked, combine it with the veggies/eggs, THEN add the pouch of powder that comes with the ramen, add some soy sauce, maybe some curry powder if you want it spicier, combine, and you’re done. Takes only 30-40 minutes tops.

^You could substitute a healthier noodle for ramen :)

lean chicken breast, frozen veggies, ___________(a little orange chicken sauce or lemon juice, or soy sauce, or pepper) = meal of champions. maybe eat a slice of bread and drink some water before eating. literally cost less than 14 dollars for like 5-6 meals filling meals XD

omg so much food im hungrey!
