We’ve been doing college tours with my son, who wants to major in Theater Dedign and Technology. We’ve hit the usual suspects…CM, NYU, etc. outstanding programs, but VERY costly. Can anyone recommend a school with lower tuition? Ideally, he’d like there to also be a Hillel on campus. Thanks!!
Muhlenberg is a top theater school that has merit awards. It is also about 33% Jewish while being a Lutheran school and I believe has a Kosher dining hall that gets excellent reviews. It is very nice school with all kinds of kids.
What about your own in-state public Us?
Happykid graduated from Towson in Theater Tech/Design. She reported that some of the best food on campus was in the Kosher dining hall.
jenallev1 I suggest you check out Muhlenberg. They have a very active Hillel. They are also very costly but very good with aid and merit money. We weren’t sure when we saw the initial tuition and room and board numbers but when they got all done, the net number was easily doable. Best of luck to you!
Thanks! State school is Illinois. Good option, but we’d like too see if he’d have any other choices…
Have you looked into SUNY Purchase?
@jenallev1 - I suggest you head over to the theater forum - lots of great resources, and suggestions there. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/
In Illinois, have you looked at Milliken U, Monmouth College, Western Illinois, and Columbia College Chicago? All of those have strong theater programs. CCC has terrific programs in design and would be worth a visit. Happykid loved it. Unfortunately, their aid program is almost nonexistent.
Temple is not as expensive as private colleges, and might offer merit aid. They have strong Theater, Music, and Dance programs, and so I imagine their production/design program is okay. It would be a BA, rather than a BFA. DePaul is first-rate, of course. It is not as expensive as Emerson, NYU, et al, and might make some aid available.
What about university of Evansville ? Strong program and good merit money.
Rutgers has a top notch theater design BFA program, has hillel, and is relatively affordable with some merit aid for design students available.
Seconding SUNY Purchase as being worth a look.
