Theater/Drama Acceptances HS Class of 2013 by College Name

Congratulations to all! Please add my D’s acceptances to:
UC Irvine (BA)
Northern Illinois University (BFA-acting)

Thank you! Still learning how CC works.

Heartsongmom, congrats. I had no idea UC Irvine had a BA in acting I thought they only had MT at the school. It’s such a great school and nice part of CA.

Hey cc world! Just checking in! I’m still waiting on the outcome of a few others, but I’m currently accepted to TCU BFA acting and Emerson BA Theatre Studies: Acting!! Hope everyone is surviving the incredibly stressful and exciting audition/ waiting season! best of luck to all

Congrats to Audacting on your acceptances. Thank you Shacherry. I’m still learning about the UC Irvine acting program. My D was accepted into the campuswide honors program which is an academic honors program. She was accepted as a drama major, then once she is in the program she can audition for the acting honors program. UCI apparently has a tiered program, mostly for MT students. I’m learning more from a student that posts on this forum. It was one of her safety schools, and it’s good to know that it has an appealing program and she’s in! More evidence that “love thy safety school” is good advice.

I found out today I was also accepted for the BFA Musical Theatre at the University of Alabama! Congrats everyone!

Heartsongmom- can you tell me when your D auditioned for Northern and when/how you found out you were accepted? My D is very interested in the program at Northern. She’s a junior now. We visited in December and she loved it. I don’t see as much about Northern on the boards.

Hi Dramamom. D auditioned as a walk in at the Chicago Unified Auditions. They notified her of her acceptance by email last week. I would love to hear about what you and your D found appealing after visiting. We have not yet visited the campus. We thought the semester studying at the Moscow Art Theatre was very impressive. Can you describe more about your campus visit?
Thank you!

Heartsong-- find “Supportive”-- her D goes to NIU, I believe.

Thanks Gwen. I’ll look for Supportive.

Sure. The campus is about an hour and fifteen minutes due west of Chicago. It is in a smallish town and it was windy and COLD. The campus is not the most beautiful one you will see but it is well kept and easy to navigate. The theatre school is about to go under a huge renovation for next year. By the time my D would start it should be finished. The “art” dorm is right beside the theatre building. Very convenient and safe as compared to some other schools.
We had an appointment with a third year grad student who was very well spoken and intelligent. She started our tour and then left us with Stanton Davis, the head of the undergrad program, in his office for about a half hour. He was really nice and down to earth in one way but then clearly spoke the “acting” language and knows his stuff.
My D could explain it all better, I am sure, but Northern is a true conservatory, with lots of time in studio. They tackle complicated text in their shows. There is a lot of movement training and the semester in Moscow is amazing; the previous head of the program at Northern is good friends with someone in Moscow and the kids get really intense training. Northern does a resume video at the end of the senior year instead of a showcase; supposedly this is the wave of the future and more useful than a showcase. Northern is also a good value compared to some schools. You can change your residency freshman year and pay in-state after the first year. They also have significant scholarships for academic merit which we will be looking at. My D is a very strong student, but Northern’s academic requirements are not difficult for a lesser student to meet. I think it is a 3.2?
My D just felt Davis spoke her language. She has trained in NY in several types of movement and voice classes and he just sounded like her other teachers I think. It was a “fit” thing.
We finished up by spending more time with the grad student who pulled sample schedules and showed us exactly what classes my D would have, etc. It was a very personalized and friendly tour. I’d go for a visit if I were you! Congrats on being accepted.

Thanks Dramamom for the information about NIU and your impressions. It sounds like a good program.

Guys does Montclair do rolling admissions for their BFA? And congrats to all!

I think it does, shacherry!

shacherry - I might be the culprit responsible for some misinformation regarding Montclair State. I just checked, and they do non-binding Early Action. Rutgers University (not Mason Gross) does rolling admissions. I just reviewed the MSU website, and it appears that a non-binding Early Action decision is possible. I think that’s what confused my recollection. I had strongly encouraged my son to consider that option - he could have auditioned in November, and had a decision (at least a BA acceptance, most likely) in December. We are NJ residents, and so the price-tag was also appealing. He simply didn’t care for MSU. Their Theatre Studies major is also an attractive alternative - it entails an interview and a group (no memorization) audition, along with a separate theatrical resume.

S was accepted to VCU for Theatre (BFA Design/Technology). Thanks and congratulations to everyone.

Statemum we are in NJ also so the price cannot be beat. Everything I read on the Montclair site in regard to the BFA and BA is just what my son is looking for. They even have a minor in creative writing or film studies. Everything he wants is there. Fingers crossed when he goes to the arts day in March he does not have the same reaction as your son.

I am having a hard time finding info on their merit awards if they give talent and academic awards. It’s a state school so I assume they do not give much.

shacherry - we can communicate via pm’s or on a separate thread; let’s leave this one, now, for its stated purpose: recording admissions decisions.

Sorry if this is inappropriate to ask on this thread, but to those of you accepted/with children accepted to Montclair, did you submit applications before auditioning, or were you walk-ins? And were these early acceptances, or recent acceptances?
