Musicals in college for BFA Actors

Even though I want a BFA in Acting, I still also love to do musicals. In most schools with BFA programs do they only cast from within the Musical Theatre BFA?

I know of MANY schools where both BFA acting and BFA MT majors end up in both musicals and plays (In fact all of the ones my D where my D applied)- but like so many other things I am sure it is something you want to check out with the schools where you are planning to apply

I have no real facts to base this on, but it would seem that if a BFA program only had an acting track and NOT an MT track, that BFA Acting students would probably at least do one or two musicals during their tenure at the school. There are probably exceptions, but for the most part, it wouldn’t make sense for a BFA Acting program to do a musical if there is an MT equivalent.

Maybe that will help you direct your research? It’s kind of grueling, but maybe look at some schools on your list and see what productions they have done in the last five years to get a feel if they are doing musicals or not.

CCPA Roosevelt just changed the rules this year to allow cross casting, though I don’t know of any acting majors who got significant roles in musicals this fall. (The first term is applied.)

Is it still true that CMU doesn’t let acting majors audition for musicals? That’s honestly the only one I’ve heard that doesn’t do cross-casting, but I haven’t really investigated. My son’s at Otterbein, where every performance major auditions for every production and there’s a lot of cross-casting.

BFA students at Otterbein audition for all shows; musicals, straight plays and the dance concert.

I remember from seeing the Wild Party at CMU last year that there were plenty of acting and MT in the show

I have no direct experience with CMU so I was basing my comment on threads like this one: <a href=“Why won't CMU let acting majors audition for musicals? - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university-mt/1438910-why-wont-cmu-let-acting-majors-audition-for-musicals-p1.html</a>
And of course things can always change–although this thread is from spring 2013.

Acting majors at CMU very often perform in musicals. Laat year, the male lead (Burrs) in Wild Party was an Acting major (and only a Junior at the time). Anecdotely, when I saw it with my S on his audition weekend, a number of his friends in the program told him the spring musical can be upwards of 50/50. They also told us two of the Senior MT leads could not do the show as they had been offered work. If you’re going to have a problem, what a nice one to have!

From what I understand about CMU (frien’ds daughter is an MT major). There are no auditions. They are cast based on their work in class. Acting and MT majors are really treated as one class. Not a whole lot of distinction as far as I’ve heard. Someone please chime in if I’m incorrect.

Would seem to me a good way to evaluate- rather than a quick song and monologue in audition! And with the size of the program I am sure the directors know the kid’s strengths well

UNCSA only has acting students yet they do musicals so definitely a yes for them! Acting students train in voice and dance.

Purchase, like NCSA, only has a BFA in acting, but they also do musicals, or I should say plays with singing. :)

For those interested in UK schools, they do not separate the training as American schools often do. So you don’t only perform in musicals, you also get training in dance, singing and MT (as well as drama, voiceover, etc). Pm me if you have any questions about the UK process.

my D is a freshman acting bfa at uarts. they cross-cast for mainstage productions.

Shenandoah allows cross casting.

James Madison is an auditioned BA. There is cross casting Musical Theatre students in plays, and Theatre students in musicals.

BFA students at University of Michigan can audition for MT or any other production…they encourage it. My son is a freshman and was cast in an opera put on by the Music department. They are required to audition for the 2-3 mainstage theatre productions put on each year (except the Fall production in their freshman year). Look for a school where there are lots of opportunities to perform…both theatre and MT. Michigan also has a student run theatre and MT groups which give the students even more performance opportunities.
