Any comments about the theatre program at NEU? It looks very good on the website. I'm curious if there is anyone directly familiar with the experience, the productions, the facilities, etc. We can't visit until spring, so it would be nice to hear others' perceptions. Thanks!

bump!
i’d like to know as well!

I graduated Northeastern with my theatre degree back in the 1990s and I can tell you these points…

– Class sizes are small.
– Get to know your theatre professors well.
– Class size of theatre majors and minors are small… you will develop many close friendships that will last a lifetime.
– Get to do at least one show per semester. Most plays and musicals take place in a studio black box theatre. Some productions that need a bigger scale, or the school wants to earn more money, the show goes to the school’s mainstage (Blackman Auditorium).
– Carol Najarian - the department’s secretary. Any problem you have, go to Carol!
– The Co-op program: Not required, but this makes it a five year program, where you can work a theatre job (like an internship) for one or two straight semesters then you go back to school the next semester. Co-op does not start until your sophomore year. It really helps build your resume and you have a leg up on other theatre graduates from other school programs who don’t do this because you would have one or two real theatre job experience already under your belt.

Notable Northeastern Theatre Alumni as far as I know:
– Jennifer Carta, who currently plays Tori Vegas’ mom on the Nickelodeon TV sitcom “Victorious.” Jennifer’s time at Northeastern did overlap with mine and I’ve seen her perform the starring role in “Top Girls” which was her final play in school before she graduated.
– Patrice O’Neal, the black stand-up comedian and actor from Comedy Central. Patrice’s time with mine also overlapped. I had a few Theatre classes with him, and he’s a great guy.

Its not perfect, but well worth being in. The friends you make. The overall experience in theatre, since you will be doing everything in all areas. Again, I graduated from this program a LONG time ago. Most of the theatre faculty whom I learned under have since moved on or retired, so I cannot really tell you what the current atmosphere is like over there. There are only three that remain from my time thats still working there now – Carol, Nancy Kindelan (acting, literature), and Janet Bobcean (design, directing). Regardless of your decision, I hope you do choose Northeastern!
