Theft?

I'm going to bring my laptop and some jewelery (nothing too flashy, but jewlery nontheless). I've never heard of any theft problems, but... should I still be worrying about bringing some sort of safebox or something?

You can get a laptop lock if you think it's necessary, but I made it through a year without one, and recommend saving your money.

If your computer is sitting on the desk and you leave the room, lock the door. Ask that your roommate does the same. If you know your roommate doesnt lock the door I would recommend a lock. If you go to the library and want to run to the bathroom or find a book or take a phone call for "just a minute"...pack up your stuff, and take it with you. It may be a hassle but it's not as big of a hassle as trying to find out who stole your laptop.

Get a laptop cable lock. Like one of these <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-64068-MicroSaver-Notebook-Security/dp/B00000K4KH/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-5035457-2919048?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183345390&sr=8-1%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-64068-MicroSaver-Notebook-Security/dp/B00000K4KH/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-5035457-2919048?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183345390&sr=8-1</a></p>

You can get them at a lot of places, just look around. Try to find ones that have a 4 digit combination because they're more secure.

As for a safe-box, I'm not really sure. In my dorm, the top drawer of our desk was able to be locked with a Master-lock, so I always put my iPod, money, digital camera, etc. in there and locked it up.

Other than that, make sure you're door is locked when you're not in the room, and make sure your roommate follows those same practices.

I think officedepot has cable locks for $10 - don't remember if its keyed or combination

It really depends. Most of my friends never had an issue with things being stolen.... it just doesn't happen often at my school. However, my best friend's roommate was a klepto who stole a LOT of her stuff, including (we suspect) her laptop. She had locked the door and left the room and when she got back, her roommate said that her ipod had been stolen and asked if my friend had anything missing- and her laptop was gone. Her roommate went home for the summer the next day before police could investigate. We went through her roommate's desk once and found my friend's thumb drive, ipod (had been wiped), and ipod charger. She ended up getting a lockbox, but that's an extreme case.

However, that PROBABLY won't happen to you. The biggest issue is inconsiderate roommates. I'd sometimes come back from class and my roommate would be in class, but her friends would be studying in my room. Now, I know they wouldn't steal anything but the worry is there. The same can be said if your roommate(s) party and you don't. A few of my friends had stuff stolen because they were forced to leave the room since their roommates wanted to party, and came back to have their stuff taken (weird stuff too.. like jackets out of a closet, text books, etc) or stuff trashed.

But yeah, as long as your roommate and you are on the same page about locking the door and who is in the room, you'll be fine.

I gave my S his choice of laptops as a high school graduation present. So, I started looking into insurance.

My homeowner's insurance policy covers my S's personal property at college (including in the dorm) so long as he does not claim the town as his permanent residence. I actually spoke with the division of the insurance company that writes the renter's insurance policies and they confirmed that no additional policy (i.e., renter's policy) was necessary.

They did suggest that we take a photograph of his room in the dorm (once it is set up) to establish what was in the room. I suggest that you make a detailed list of your stuff as you pack. To the extent you are buying new items, keep the receipts.

I suggest that you (or your parents) look into this issue with their insurance company.

I called campus security at his college and they said to etch initials and date of birth for identity purposes. They said that for rings and other jewelry, it is advisable to bring a lockbox and keep them in there and place the box in a location that would take a few moments to reach.

My S plans to take his passport. I have asked him to see if the bank just off campus has a safety deposit box. You DO NOT want to lose your passport.
