Let's say I get to live in one of the residential hall that's tagged with a theme. Will I be obligated to participate in their weekly activities? I really want the triple mini suite in Unit 1, but one of the two halls Christian and Slottman features the African American theme. I am Asian and I think I will feel fairly awkward celebrating AA culture.

Only if you end up in Christian Hall floors 5-6 do you have to take a weekly seminar and participate in group meetings for the AA theme program. I'm assuming all the other floors in Christian Hall do not have to participate in the theme program because it's optional for the residents on those floors.

I think you have to apply to get into a theme program anyways, so Housing Services probably wouldn't force you into a program you didn't apply for. That would be annoying and problematic.

I'm not sure on your year, but just as a heads up mini-suites are usually only available to students in regents or people with more seniority. There are a few exceptions every year with lucky individuals or people with 'connections'. So a lot of people tend to request doubles/triples as freshmen to maximize use of their housing preferences on the application.

Yeah, you have to participate in weekly meetings, freshman seminars. You get a 1 unit credit for it. Not to worry, I have a friend who's black who was in the asian theme house. She felt a bit awkward at first, but liked that she could learn diversity, and in all, it was a good experience.

I'll be in a Christian min-suite next year and I look forward to it. Don't like hip hop, so might get a little annoyed listening to that kind of stereo-typical kind of music blasting out the windows, if that's what will happen, but if the AA theme house group hits the reggae button, I'm THERE!
