and 4 are competing for rank 1, except 1, a good sensible friend of mine who decided to go for salutorian instead. and we don't have a real life teacher anymore.

:(

and only 2 in my ap physics class, me and the daughter of the (regular) physics teacher. no real life teacher for AP.

:(:(

I knew my school was bad but there are always at least 10 in ap calc...

:(:(:(

this year is going to be crazy competitive. one of the above tried to grab my schedule when i wasn't paying attention. :(

i finished my 2nd day and already broke down. the guidance counselor was being very mean and she had no idea what I was going through at home and i tried so hard but couldn't stop the tears. :(:(

to think i was looking forward to senior year! 168 days left and everyone's counting.

i'm sorry! maybe you're lucky to not have this irritating competiton? It's online in text this year, you read the lessons and take quizzes online by yourself, tests are monitored. no videos, nothing. ap physics wasn't offered till this year actually. it's like studying out of a dry textbook.

I think everyone's so competitive all of a sudden for the 10 grand and free laptop coming with val.

I just can't freaking wait to start life anew away from this place, I sometimes find myself hating everyone around me.

Yes, I can somewhat understand. However, my High school experience totals to one day. Out of 720 days.
But probably, if I was in that position aswell, I would try for Val, even if it means losing my social life, sanity, etc.,

Oh wow. You are complaining about something that is good. My school, we don't have a real valedictorian. Everyone with 4.0 unweighted after 1st semester senior year is a "valedictorian", but the competition is intense. At a normal school, I could probably be valedictorian with minimal effort, but here its a *****.

Around 120 out of 450 get into UCLA/ UC Berkeley each year.
Around 15 out of 450 get into HYPMS.
Around another 25 get into the lower Ivies.

Basically if you compete with the top 40, you are competing in the Ivies... and all for squat.

Haha Chaos. Good luck child. I find myself so tired lately, already. Yep I'm definently going to try, some of the kids competing I really don't like and seeing them win instead would probably make me angry...plus I'm already this far...

one girl was sitting by herself writing down the classes she thought the otheres were taking, calculating her chances. =

Is your school competitive? I know at some larger schools someone could be competing with up to 15+ kids, but for a small school where there's usually only 1 (known) one, 5 is some competition.

FastMed- our school was like that (much smaller though), up until this year. Only 8 ap's were offered, and if you took all 8 along with other courses with As (which is just 93+), you were val. But they changed the system my senior year, and now it's the one with the most APs wins. You also have a really large graduating class, we have around 100 or less...

You also have to take the AP exam this year. so far i have 6 ap's out of 7 classes, the GC wouldn't let me take a 7th ap.

But it's not very good to have to learn hard classes like ap calculus and ap physics almost completely on your own, right? Do you go to a private school or something, and that's why it's harder? or maybe a magnet school?

I mean, our classes aren't really that easy, for example, the val from 2 years ago is still making straight As at UVa.

I'm not sure how competitive my high school is compared to you guy's. I don't think they give statistics of college acceptances or maybe I have yet to find them. Anyways, the graduating class always has 1000+ kids (usually hits 1200), and the district offers 31 APs. Val usually takes 14+ APs (because GPA is weighted) and earns all or close to all A's (97+) in his/her classes. One awesome thing about having a large high school is that I only need to be top 100 to be in the top 10% and top 10 is top 1% :D I mean, top 100 shouldn't be too hard considering we have our fair share of dumb@sses ;)

"I knew my school was bad but there are always at least 10 in ap calc...
"
Pffft at least you have AP calc & AP physics.
That's more than my school can say.

I'm not going to even be able to take a science this year because there's only 1 honors class at one period, and the science would mess with that period... and yeah. xP Some classes have so few people coughAP chemcough they don't even bother to run them, which sucks for me. ;(

"Only 8 ap's were offered,"

Only? Hah, we have 5, and 2 are languages.

A lot of people on here takes for granted what their high school has. ;P

I will be the only one in my AP French Language and AP French Literature next year because I am the only one that qualifies to take it in my school.

Heh, I thought I'd drop in to see what the high school life forum is like, which feels kind of illegitimate because I'm not a high schooler anymore. I see life still isn't easy.

Sarorah, I definitely don't envy your situation. It's not "actually a good situation" as others have claimed. I really don't think high school competition for that extra .1 GPA or to take that extra pointless weighted class is very healthy, nor very productive in the end. That doesn't mean it isn't pervasive. Rest assured that you'll end up in a great college no matter if you're ranked 1 or 10, and you'll look back on all of this stuff and realize just now inane and pointless it was. Sarorah I always thought you were a pretty sharp girl, and I have no doubt that you'll make it through the school year just fine.

I have 35 in my class and theres 3-4 periods of BC. Physics B last year had about 40 in a room with <30 desks, people had to sit at the lab tables.

Damn you guys are lucky. My school's like War Chant. If there's not at least 18 kids for an AP class my school just doesn't have it.

Also, if 4 people are competing for #1, how the hell does one person compete for #2? The number still has to be better than the other 3 who didn't get #1. Just wanted to point that out to the first poster.

Also, it's your own problem. You chose what you wanted to do in high school. Live it and enjoy it. Also, even though you're ragging on the other kids who "do crazy stuff for college" I have a feeling you do too. I mean, first you post your stories about "oh woe is me, I work so hard...noooo..." on CC, and then you write about how people "try to grab my schedule" meaning you don't like to show people your schedule since you're under the misguided conception that "it matters."

some people need to chill and relax. I wish there was only 5 people in my classes, not the 30 I have. You guys need to stop and rethink your lives, cuz from what I see all you're doing is wasting it for a "dream" that's really twisted in reality. Also, you need to rethink whether you're ready for the top Ivies if you're already killing yourself in high school.

Yeah my school has 6 kids eligible for BC calc. They will split them into TWO CLASSES. We have no teacher, so I'll have to teach the rest of the people in my class.

I feel bad for my sister, she'll be the only one in her class.
