there's this stupid kid that i know

who put

Legacy and underrepresented minority from north dakota under the awards and recognition section of common app

lol...does this thread have a point?

people wanting something for nothing

maybe we're supposed to talk about all the stupid kids we know...

there's this stupid kid I know that goes around and acts like he's brilliant because he's top 10% of his class and scored an 1850 on his SAT. He thinks UT-Austin is going to just give him a huge scholarship and refuses to fill out the Freshman App for Scholarships.

Wow...

There's this girl I know who has a 1500 SAT and says "Oh, I'll probably get into Stanford." Lol. And her AP scores are like 1's and 2's, and her subject tests scores are in the low 500's. I just smile and shake my head in agreement. :)

To the Texas kid, he will get a full ride cause hes top 10%

I hope that's sarcasm. :D

All top 10% guarantees is acceptance.

Does top-10% guarantee acceptance to UT Austin or just one of the Texas schools? If it guarantees acceptance to UT Austin, that's pretty amazing...

it guarantees acceptance to UT Austin, but I've heard Congress is thinking of capping what percentage of the class can be top 10% Texans. It doesn't guarantee acceptance into your specific major or any specific college though (McCombs, Plan II, etc.) But it is a pretty sweet deal for Texans.

There's this girl in my class who's a total slacker and has a bad gpa. One of her EC's is dance. I've seen her dance; it's nothing to write home about. She's not stupid, acutally, if she put in an effort she would do well, but she's tjust toally apathetic and would rather skip school and whine about her D than go to school and be happy with her B. Anyways, in 9th and 8th grade she told everybody that she wanted to go to Julliard or Princeton. We all just smiled and nodded in agreement, knowing the truth. Last year she lowered her aims tremendously: she wanted to go to Wayne State. Now, she wants to go to Yeshiva University, a university that, very frankly, anyone who is Jewish and breathes can get into. So ya, that's my story.

The problem though, is jsut because you are in the 10% doesn't mean you are auto accepted. That kid WON'T get in if he DOES NOT apply. That's the point, I think that brand was going for. It's a pretty sad story for some who don't get in anywhere after they get rejected by all their reaches and get ready to go to UT when they realize they never received an acceptance because they never applied.

yeah, it guarantees acceptance obviously granted that you apply...but there's no way in hell it guarantees a full ride. HAHAHAHA.

i live in texas and believe it or not some people think the top 10% rule is actually a really bad thing. for example, my friend graduated in the top 15% last year and didnt get into UT-austin. however, she was president of two clubs, national merit semifinalist, and had over 300 community service hours.

on the other hand, this kid who was in the top 10% but had absolutely nothing else and was even suspended for a day because he cussed out a teacher got in and is now attending.

i personally think the rule can be ridiculous sometimes...

(wondering where my friend ended up???? rice!)

I AGREE COMPLETELY. I live in Texas as well and hate the top 10% rule just b/c stupid people (like the one I posted about earlier) will get in and other great students may not. I hope they abolish it eventually.

stop hating, worry about yourself

i'll never stop hating.

And I'm not too worried...I've already been accepted once. ;)

Yeah, the top 10% rule definately SUCKS.

I live in texas, and am in the top 12% and definately have a chance of getting rejected. My future is in the hands of the admissions counsellors, and i don't like the thought of that. o_0.
