Now that I would like to see, I can only imagine the response PETA would get, haha.

Usna09mom has an understandable practical view on why they would cancel a 90 year tradition of JROTC in that school district. No money means no money. If only the board took the stance that it was indeed only a funding issue. The board’s position on why they cancelled the program is what raised the eyebrows. They perhaps should have re-considered putting their representatives on national network television saying that they cancelled it because the military should be contained outside a public institution & that they were against the military’s ‘don’t ask don’t tell policy’ which does not relate to JROTC as the kids aren’t military and aren‘t discriminated against joining a JROTC unit. My eyebrow is still raised over the issue.

LOL on PETA. They do their own form of bullying and they don't have the well, you know and I am certain KP10 will come and tell us what they don't have to really be consistent in their protests.

I agree Jamzmom. It certainly could be budgetary. And if that is the case present that as the case. They didn't. They presented it, or atleast the press presented it as a removal from the school due to public sentiment against the program and the military.

The real reason the program is being cut is that there is no direct correlation between JROTC and higher test scores

Actual, direct, quote from a highly-regarded teacher in my son's Microsoft-suburb high school (slightly paraphrased since I'm doing this from memory): "The district doesn't really care about your son. He's going to pass the WASL no matter what. Why should they spend money on advanced programs for smart kids when all they [district management] are rewarded on is improvements in the number of students passing the WASL? Money spent on anything other than getting marginally-competent students to pass the WASL is money wasted." She was depressed, and then so was I.

OMG Rick you must be living in the ISD!!!!!!

The whole focus of education here is the WASL and mediocracy that placates the almight WASL.

The original intent of the WASL was to hold teachers accountable to teach the things the students needed to learn.

Now the WASL is a test that students are required to pass to graduate.

I will say though at the ISD that the JROTC program on the north end of the district was shut down to utilize the funds from it to meet the needs of the "gifted" student. However I am not so convinced that the needs of the "gifted" students are met in these programs as much as the egos of the parents are stroked by their kids qualifying for them. I have seen first hand that the "advanced placement math" in middle school is nothing more that a "my child made it into APM" pride as the curriculum is hardly rigorous and the requirement for an a minus to maintain status in the class is greatly protected by superflous extra credit activities. That is another whole discussion.........

actualy i am a big fan of the peta/greenpeace lady who when and protested on the seal trap off meadows point seattle (22°-25'10''N 047°41'20''W) it turned out the sea lions didnt like her presence and attacked her... and trust me thoses things are mean and smelly... try using that cage as a mark for practice....

usna09mom, you were very kind to suggest the decision was a financial issue. However, the San Francisco Board of Education budget is $627 million. The amount involved here, after Uncle Sam's contribution, is less than two-tenths of a percent.

watch this...
<a href="http://hotair.com/archives/2006/12/04/the-bigots-of-san-francisco/%5B/url%5D">http://hotair.com/archives/2006/12/04/the-bigots-of-san-francisco/</a></p>

so much for it being about money...

America should pull out of San Francisco.

whatever happened to being punished for Treason?
